First Chronicles 25:17 is a plain record of duty. It says that the tenth turn of temple musicians fell to Shimei, along with his sons and his brothers, twelve men in all. The verse is part of a census-style list in which the writer, traditionally identified as Ezra, tracks which family serves at which time within the Levitical music ministry David had organized for worship.

What 1 Chronicles 25:17 Means

The verse begins with “the tenth,” which is the order of service. The musicians were divided into twenty-four groups, and each group took its place in a rotation. Shimei’s family was assigned the tenth position, so when that turn came around, they were the ones to lead the songs and instruments in the house of the Lord.

The phrase “his sons and his brothers, twelve” describes the team. Shimei is not serving alone. He leads a group of twelve who share the work together. The number tells you that worship in ancient Israel was a shared responsibility carried by families and their relatives, not a single star performer on a stage.

The verse does not promise Shimei any particular reward, nor does it tell us what songs were sung on his day. It simply records a faithful assignment. Its value lies in showing that ordinary, repeated service, performed in its appointed time, was counted as part of the work God’s people were given to do.

The Context of 1 Chronicles 25:17

First Chronicles 25 belongs to a larger section describing how David and his commanders set apart the Levites for temple service. Chapter 25 focuses on the singers and musicians, the sons of Asaph, Heman and Jeduthun, who prophesied with lyres, harps and cymbals. Verse 17 sits within a sequence of lots that determined the order of service, and the surrounding verses in 25:14 to 25:20 list the next groups in turn: seventh, eighth, ninth, eleventh, twelfth and thirteenth.

Reading the verse with that sequence in mind changes how it sounds. It is not an isolated detail but one link in a chain that was designed to keep worship orderly, fair and continuous. Each family knew its season, and no one was overlooked or left to compete for the honor. That careful structure is part of what the chronicler wants his readers to see about how God’s house was to be cared for.

Key Phrases in 1 Chronicles 25:17

Romans 12:6

Having gifts differing according to the grace that was given to us, if prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of our faith…

(WEB)

Paul writes that believers have different gifts according to the grace given to them. Like the temple musicians, each person has a place and a function, and the verse helps explain why faithful use of an assigned gift matters.

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

This verse urges believers to work heartily as serving the Lord and not merely people. It fits well with the idea of faithful, ordinary service that 1 Chronicles 25:17 quietly records.

A Short Prayer From 1 Chronicles 25:17

Lord, you have given every family and every person a place in the work of your house. Some of us are in the front and some in the background, and some of us are simply waiting for our turn to come around again. Help me to take up my assigned place with faithfulness and not with envy or impatience.

Thank you for the people who serve beside me, whether they are my family, my church, or those who carry the turns I cannot. Teach me to honor their faithfulness as I honor my own. Let my service, however small it appears, be offered to you with a whole heart. Amen.
