This lesson teaches children that God gives every person a job in His house, and that faithful helpers who do their part are important to Him. It works well for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.

Big Idea

God gives every helper a job to do in His house, and He wants us to do our jobs faithfully and with a willing heart, no matter how small they seem.

Memory Verse

1 Chronicles 26:12

Of these were the divisions of the doorkeepers, even of the chief men, having offices like their brothers, to minister in the LORD’s house.

(WEB)

Have the children stand tall and then bow their heads as they say the verse together. Pair each phrase with a small movement, like tapping their chest for “they” and holding their hands open for “ministry.” Repeat it three times, faster each time.

The Story: 1 Chronicles 26 for Kids

Long ago, King David had a big plan for the house of God in Jerusalem. The temple was a special place where people came to worship the LORD. Many helpers were needed to take care of it, so the workers were divided into groups, and each group had a special job.

Some of the helpers were gatekeepers. Their job was to stand at the gates of the house of God and keep watch day and night. Imagine standing guard at the door of a very important place every single day! The men drew lots to decide which gate each family would guard. A lot was something like drawing a name out of a hat, and God’s people trusted Him to guide the choice.

Other helpers were in charge of the treasures. The gold, silver, and other gifts that people had dedicated to God were kept safe in storerooms. Shelomoth and his brothers had the important job of watching over these special things. They were trusted with a lot of responsibility.

Some men were chosen to handle the work outside the temple. They helped the king with all his business and made sure the people were taken care of. The Bible tells us these helpers were brave, able, and ready to serve. They knew their work mattered, even when no one was watching.

The story shows us that everyone in God’s family has something to do. As one helper might say, “I may not be the leader, but I can still do my part well for God.” Every job, big or small, was given by God and counted for something.

Read It Together

1 Chronicles 26:20

Of the Levites, Ahijah was over the treasures of God’s house and over the treasures of the dedicated things.

(WEB)

Point out that Ahijah was trusted to look after the treasures of God’s house. Ask the children what it would feel like to be trusted with something so valuable. Explain that trust is a gift God gives to faithful people.

1 Chronicles 26:27

They dedicated some of the plunder won in battles to repair the LORD’s house.

(WEB)

Show the children that the people gave some of what they won in battle to repair God’s house. Explain that giving back to God was a way of honoring Him. Ask how we can give our best to God today.

1 Chronicles 26:30

Of the Hebronites, Hashabiah and his brothers, men of valor, one thousand seven hundred, had the oversight of Israel beyond the Jordan westward, for all the business of the LORD, and for the service of the king.

(WEB)

Point out that Hashabiah and his brothers were men of valor who looked after Israel and served both God and the king. Remind the children that God can use strong, brave helpers for many kinds of work.

Talk About It

  • What job do you think you would enjoy doing to help at church or at home?
  • Why do you think God wanted the gatekeepers to watch the doors every day?
  • How did the helpers show that they cared about the house of God?
  • What is one small thing you can do this week to help someone else?
  • How can you show God that you are a faithful helper, even when no one is watching?

Activity Ideas

Helper Badge Craft

You will need paper, crayons or markers, scissors, and a safety pin or tape. Have each child cut out a badge shape and draw a picture of a job they could do to help God’s family. Write their name and the word “Helper” on it. Pin or tape the badge to their shirt and talk about how each helper has a special job.

Gatekeeper Game

You will need a few chairs or cones to mark gates and a small bell or clap. Set up gates around the room and have children take turns standing guard at each one. When you clap, they switch gates and say “I am faithful to my post.” Keep it lively, and end by talking about how every job matters.

Take-Home Helper Chart

You will need a sheet of paper, a pencil, and a sticker for each child. Draw a simple chart with days of the week across the top and a list of helping tasks down the side, such as setting the table or picking up toys. Ask each child to choose one task and place a sticker when they complete it. Encourage families to talk about how each job helps the whole household, just as the helpers served God’s house.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter shows that God organizes His people with care and assigns each person a meaningful role. The lists of names remind us that God knows His servants individually and values faithful service in every position, from doorkeeper to treasurer to overseer. The passage invites reflection on how we use our gifts and responsibilities in the church community.

Be careful not to overstate the lottery element to children, as if drawing lots were the way God always makes decisions. Explain simply that the people trusted God to guide the choice, and avoid turning the story into a rule for their own choices.

A Prayer to Close

Dear Lord, thank You for giving each of us a job to do in Your house. Help us be faithful helpers, whether our jobs are big or small. Show us how to serve You with a willing heart each day. We love You, and we trust You to guide us. Amen.
