This page gives you questions and answers for a study of 1 Chronicles 27, a chapter that lists the officers who ran King David’s government: the monthly army divisions, the tribal leaders, and the men who managed the royal property. It works for a small group, a Sunday class, or personal reflection, and each question comes with a discussion note you can use or adapt.

1 Chronicles 27 at a Glance

The chapter moves in three blocks. It opens with the twelve monthly divisions of the army, each led by a named captain and each containing twenty-four thousand men on rotation. It then names the leaders of the twelve tribes and the other responsible men, including a notable note that David did not finish a census of the people. The final block lists the royal officials in charge of treasuries, fields, vineyards, livestock, and the king’s inner circle of advisers.

Read the chapter as an org chart of a working kingdom. The names can feel like a wall of unfamiliar words, so a leader may find it helpful to look for the repeated pattern of “over” and “was” and let the list itself carry the point: David’s realm depended on many faithful people doing specific jobs well.

Observation Questions

Use these first to make sure everyone has seen what the text literally says before anyone starts drawing conclusions. Keep answers tied to the words on the page and resist the urge to explain yet.

1 Chronicles 27:1

Now the children of Israel after their number, the heads of fathers’ households and the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and their officers who served the king, in any matter of the divisions which came in and went out month by month throughout all the months of the year—of every division were twenty-four thousand.

This verse introduces the whole system of monthly divisions and sets the pattern of rotating service that the chapter then develops. Reading it first helps the group see the order behind the names.

1 Chronicles 27:23

But David didn’t take the number of them from twenty years old and under, because the LORD had said he would increase Israel like the stars of the sky.

(WEB)

This verse gives the reason David withheld the count, rooted in God’s promise to increase Israel. It is the theological center of the chapter and deserves a slow reading.

1 Chronicles 27:24

Joab the son of Zeruiah began to take a census, but didn’t finish; and wrath came on Israel for this. The number wasn’t put into the account in the chronicles of king David.

Here the chronicler records Joab’s unfinished census and God’s response. Reading it aloud invites honest reflection on pride, consequence, and the limits of human planning.

1 Chronicles 27:32-34

32 Also Jonathan, David’s uncle, was a counselor, a man of understanding, and a scribe; and Jehiel the son of Hachmoni was with the king’s sons. 33 Ahithophel was the king’s counselor: and Hushai the Archite was the king’s friend. 34 After Ahithophel was Jehoiada the son of Benaiah, and Abiathar. Joab was the captain of the king’s army.

This closing passage names the king’s counselors and friends. It makes a good anchor for conversation about the people who shape our decisions and our faithfulness.

1 Chronicles 27:25

Over the king’s treasures was Azmaveth the son of Adiel: and over the treasures in the fields, in the cities, and in the villages, and in the towers, was Jonathan the son of Uzziah…

(WEB)

This verse introduces the royal treasury officials and the wider management of the king’s property. Reading it helps the group connect the chapter to questions of stewardship in ordinary life.

Memory Verse for 1 Chronicles 27

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we thank you that you know the names of the faithful and that no role in your kingdom is too small to matter. Help us to serve steadily in the places you have given us, whether they feel visible or hidden. Teach us to hold our plans and our numbers loosely, trusting your promises above our own calculations. Give us wise and honest friends who speak truth into our lives, and make us good stewards of what you have placed in our hands. Shape our hearts to follow you faithfully, one day and one month at a time. Amen.
