1 John 4 at a Glance
John opens by warning believers not to accept every claim to speak for God. They are to test the spirits by whether a teaching confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh. From there he moves to the centre of the chapter: God is love, and love comes from God. He shows that God’s love was revealed by sending his Son as the sacrifice for our sins, and that this love shapes how we treat one another.
The chapter closes with love driving out fear, and with a hard test of honesty. A person who claims to love God while hating a brother or sister is not telling the truth. Read the whole chapter as one argument moving from truth, to love, to fearless confidence, to a love that is visible in daily relationships.
Observation Questions
Use these questions first, before anyone offers an opinion. Ask the group to point to the actual words in the text and to resist explaining yet. Let silence sit for a moment, then ask who sees something different.
1 John 4:7-8
7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves has been born of God, and knows God. 8 He who doesn’t love doesn’t know God, for God is love.
(WEB)
Read this passage early in the session to set the centre of the chapter. Its plain claim that God is love gives the group a foundation for everything that follows. Pause after reading so people can hear the statement fresh.
1 John 4:9-10
9 By this God’s love was revealed in us, that God has sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son as the atoning sacrifice for our sins.
(WEB)
Read this to show where love is defined. Hearing the sending of the Son stated clearly helps the group see that love is grounded in what God has done rather than in feelings alone.
1 John 4:16-18
16 We know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and he who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him. 17 In this love has been made perfect among us, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment, because as he is, even so are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear has punishment. He who fears is not made perfect in love.
(WEB)
Read this near the end of the discussion to bring the group toward confidence. Hearing that perfect love casts out fear can settle an anxious room and invite honest reflection.
1 John 4:19-21
19 We love him, because he first loved us. 20 If a man says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who doesn’t love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? 21 This commandment we have from him, that he who loves God should also love his brother.
(WEB)
Read this as a challenge to close the teaching portion. It is short enough to remember and direct enough to prompt a serious look at everyday relationships.
1 John 4:1-3
1 Beloved, don’t believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit who confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, 3 and every spirit who doesn’t confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God, and this is the spirit of the Antichrist, of whom you have heard that it comes. Now it is in the world already.

Read this at the start of the session to frame the chapter around careful discernment. It gives the group a reason to listen closely to what is being taught.
Memory Verse for 1 John 4
1 John 4:8
He who doesn’t love doesn’t know God, for God is love.

This short verse holds the heart of the chapter in one sentence. Encourage the group to repeat it aloud together and to notice how it shapes the way they read the rest of the chapter.
A Closing Prayer for the Group
Father, we come to you as people who want to know your truth and live in your love. Teach us to listen carefully to what is spoken in your name, and to hold fast to the confession that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh. Thank you that you first loved us and sent your Son as the sacrifice for our sins. Help us to love one another in ways that are real and visible, so that your love is made complete among us. Remove our fear and give us confidence for the day we will stand before you. Amen.
