In this lesson, children learn that God keeps every promise He makes, and that He is always ready to hear when His people pray. This lesson suits children aged 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including the story, the activity, and the prayer.

Big Idea

God always keeps His promises, and He always listens when we talk to Him. Solomon prayed, and God heard him from heaven, His home.

Memory Verse

1 Kings 8:56

“Blessed be the LORD, who has given rest to his people Israel, according to all that he promised. There has not failed one word of all his good promise, which he promised by Moses his servant.

(WEB)

Have children stand tall with arms stretched out wide, like they are holding a big promise. Then slowly bring their hands together in front of their hearts as they say the verse with you. Repeat it three times, getting a little softer each time, until they can say it with their eyes closed.

The Story: 1 Kings 8 for Kids

A long time ago, King Solomon was the ruler of Israel. His father, King David, had wanted to build a special house for God, but God told David that his son Solomon would build it instead. Now the house was finished, and it was time to bring the golden box called the ark into it. The ark held the stone tablets with God’s special rules written on them.

Solomon gathered all the leaders of Israel in Jerusalem. The priests carried the ark carefully through the city, and the people walked with them. Many sheep and cattle were offered to God, so many that no one could count them all. The priests placed the ark in the most holy room of the Temple, under the wings of two giant statues of angels called cherubim.

Then something amazing happened. A thick cloud filled the house, and the priests could not stand to work inside because God’s glory was there. Solomon knew that God was present in a special way. He said, “Lord, You promised my father David that this house would be built. You kept Your word, and I thank You.”

Solomon stood before the altar with his hands lifted up to heaven and prayed a long, long prayer. He asked God to hear the prayers of His people, whether they were in the Temple, far away in another land, or in trouble. He asked God to forgive them when they did wrong and to listen when they called out to Him.

When Solomon finished praying, he turned around and blessed all the people with a loud voice. He said that God had kept every good promise He had made. Then Solomon asked God to be with the people and to help them love Him and follow Him every day.

Read It Together

1 Kings 8:27

But will God in very deed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens can’t contain you; how much less this house that I have built!

(WEB)

Point out that even the highest heaven cannot hold God, yet He chose to be near His people. Ask children what it means that God is so big and yet still close to them. Help them see that God is bigger than any building we could make.

1 Kings 8:30

Listen to the supplication of your servant, and of your people Israel, when they pray toward this place. Yes, hear in heaven, your dwelling place; and when you hear, forgive.

(WEB)

Show children that Solomon asked God to listen when the people prayed. Point out the words “hear in heaven,” which tell us God is always listening. Talk about how we can pray to God anytime, anywhere.

1 Kings 8:39

Then hear in heaven, your dwelling place, and forgive, and act, and give to every man according to all his ways, whose heart you know (for you, even you only, know the hearts of all the children of men)…

(WEB)

Explain that God knows our hearts better than anyone else. Point out that God knows what we are really feeling and thinking. Encourage children that they can be honest with God about their feelings.

Talk About It

  • What did Solomon do when the cloud filled the house, and why do you think he thanked God?
  • How did God keep the promise He made to King David?
  • Where did Solomon say God could hear the prayers of His people?
  • What is one thing you would like to ask God about today?
  • How does it feel to know that God always hears you when you pray?

Activity Ideas

Cloud and Temple Craft

You will need a sheet of blue construction paper, cotton balls, glue, and crayons. Have children draw a simple building on the paper, then glue cotton balls above it to make a cloud. Explain that the cloud showed God was present in the Temple. Let them add a small golden box inside the building to remember the ark.

Promise Keeper Game

Gather the children in a circle and choose one child to be the “promise keeper.” Everyone else makes a simple promise, like “I will help clean up,” and the promise keeper must remember them all. Then have the children do a movement, such as raising their hands high, to show that God hears every word. Keep the game lively and short.

Prayer Reminder Card

You will need an index card, markers, and a piece of string or yarn. Have each child write or draw one thing they want to pray about on the card. Punch a hole in the corner, thread the string through, and let them tie it to their wrist or backpack. Encourage them to look at the card each day and pray about what they drew.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter shows that God keeps His word across generations, from David’s promise to Solomon’s temple. It also reveals that God’s presence is not limited to one building, since Solomon prayed that God would hear prayers from any place. Adults can take comfort that God listens to repentant hearts and offers forgiveness.

When teaching children, avoid overstating the idea that God lives inside a physical building. Explain that the Temple was a special place where God chose to show His presence, but that He is everywhere and can be prayed to anytime, anywhere.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank You for keeping every promise You make to us. Thank You for listening when we pray, whether we are at home, at school, or anywhere else. Help us to trust You and talk to You every day. Amen.
