In this lesson, children learn that God helps us do good and be kind even when others are unkind to us. This lesson takes about 20 to 30 minutes and is best for children ages 5 to 11.
Big Idea
We can be kind and gentle, even when people are mean, because Jesus is always with us. God sees what is in our hearts and loves a kind, quiet spirit.
Memory Verse
1 Peter 3:8
Finally, be all like-minded, compassionate, loving as brothers, tender hearted, courteous…
(WEB)
Teach children to put one hand on their heart and then spread both arms wide, like giving a big hug. Say “Be kind to everyone!” as you open your arms. Repeat it together three times, getting a little quieter each time.
The Story: 1 Peter 3 for Kids
Long ago, Peter wrote a letter to Christians who were living in hard places. Some people did not like them because they followed Jesus. Peter wanted them to know that God was still caring for them. He told them to be gentle and kind, even to people who were not kind back.
Peter talked to wives and husbands about treating each other with love and respect. He reminded them that inside a person’s heart is what matters most to God. A gentle and quiet spirit is very precious to Him. He also pointed to Sarah, who trusted God and did what was good.
Next, Peter told everyone to be like-minded, kind, and tender. When someone says something mean, do not say something mean back. Instead, bless them. Peter said, “Keep your tongue from evil.” Choose words that make peace. Do good, and look for ways to live peacefully with others.
Peter knew that doing right can sometimes be hard. He said that God sees the good people do. God’s eyes are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their prayers. Even when people speak against them, the believers can keep their good conscience and not be afraid.
Peter remembered that Jesus suffered for us, even though He never did anything wrong. Jesus was put to death, but God raised Him to life again. Peter also told a story about Noah and the ark, where a few people were saved through water. Peter said this was like baptism, which saves us through Jesus rising from the dead.
Peter closed by reminding everyone that Jesus is at the right hand of God in heaven. Angels and powers are under His rule. Because of that, Christians can have hope, even when life is hard.
Read It Together
1 Peter 3:4
But in the hidden person of the heart, in the incorruptible adornment of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God very precious.
(WEB)
Point out that God cares most about what is inside our hearts. Ask children what a “gentle and quiet spirit” might look like at school or at home. Help them see that kindness is something we show with our actions and attitudes.
1 Peter 3:9
Not rendering evil for evil, or insult for insult; but instead blessing; knowing that to this were you called, that you may inherit a blessing.
(WEB)
Show children that Peter tells us to bless people instead of returning insult for insult. Talk about a time when someone was unkind to them and how they could bless that person instead. Encourage them to think of one simple way to do that this week.
1 Peter 3:14-15
14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed. “Don’t fear what they fear, neither be troubled.” 15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts; and always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, with humility and fear…
(WEB)
Explain that Peter says we can be brave and not be afraid, because we honor the Lord in our hearts. Help children understand that they can always talk to God when they feel scared. Remind them that Jesus is with them even when they are unsure.
Talk About It
- What is one way you can show kindness to someone who has been unkind to you?
- Why do you think God cares more about our hearts than about the clothes we wear?
- What does it feel like when someone blesses you instead of being mean?
- How can we remember that Jesus is with us when we feel scared?
- What is one thing you can say to God when you need help being brave?
Activity Ideas
Heart Drawing Craft
You will need paper, crayons or markers, and scissors. Have each child trace a large heart on the paper and cut it out. Inside the heart, they can draw or write one kind thing they can do this week. Hang the hearts in your room as a reminder that God cares about what is inside.
Bless and Pass Game
Gather the children in a circle and pass a soft ball or stuffed animal around. While passing, each child says a short blessing to the one next to them, like “God loves you” or “I hope you have a good day.” Keep the game moving and celebrate each kind word with a cheer.
Kindness Reminder Card
You will need index cards, markers, and a pencil. Ask each child to write or draw a picture of a kind act on one side of the card, and a short prayer asking Jesus for help on the other side. Let them take the card home and place it somewhere they will see it each morning, like on the fridge or by their bed.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this passage calls believers to live with gentleness, integrity, and hope even when they face opposition. Peter points to Christ’s own suffering and resurrection as the foundation for that hope. The chapter invites us to see that our inner character matters deeply to God.
When teaching children, avoid overstating the idea that being kind will always make people treat us well. Some people may stay unkind, and children should know they can still feel safe and loved by God and trusted adults. Focus on God’s faithfulness rather than promising guaranteed results.
A Prayer to Close
Dear God, thank You for loving us and for being with us every day. Help us to be kind and gentle, even when others are not kind to us. Show us how to bless people and to keep our hearts clean and good. We trust You to keep us brave and safe, because Jesus is always with us. Amen.
