1 Timothy 1:11 says that the message Paul preaches is the good news about the glory of God, and that this message has been placed in his care as a trust he must faithfully carry. Paul is the writer, and he is writing to his younger colleague Timothy, whom he has left in Ephesus to guard sound teaching in the churches there.

According to the Good News of the glory of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.

What 1 Timothy 1:11 Means

The phrase “the Good News” translates a word meaning gospel, the announcement that God has acted decisively in Christ. Paul calls it the good news “of the glory of the blessed God,” which tells us the content of the gospel is not mainly a set of rules but a revelation of who God is: radiant, generous, and happy in his own goodness. The word “blessed” points to God’s perfect contentment and joy, not to a God who needs anything from us.

The verse then says this gospel was “committed to my trust.” The idea is of a deposit, like money or a valuable object handed to a steward for safekeeping. Paul did not invent the message or earn it. He received it and is responsible for passing it on accurately. The verse does not promise that every hearer will believe, nor that Paul’s ministry will be easy. It describes what the message is and who holds it.

The Context of 1 Timothy 1:11

First Timothy is one of the letters Paul wrote to pastoral coworkers, giving practical instruction about teaching, leadership, and church life. Timothy faced false teachers who were distracting believers with speculations and debates about law, and Paul wants him to keep the church anchored to the sound teaching that flows from the gospel.

Just before verse 11, Paul explains that the law is good when used properly, and that it exposes sin of many kinds. Verse 11 then names the standard that the law points toward: the gospel of God’s glory. Immediately after, in verses 12 through 14, Paul speaks of his own experience, describing himself as a former blasphemer and persecutor who received mercy. Read in this setting, verse 11 is the hinge between the warning about sin and the testimony of grace, showing that the gospel Paul carries is the same gospel that rescued him.

Key Phrases in 1 Timothy 1:11

2 Timothy 1:14

That good thing which was committed to you, guard through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.

(WEB)

Paul writes this to Timothy near the end of his life, urging him to guard the good deposit entrusted to him by the Holy Spirit. It echoes the idea of trust in 1 Timothy 1:11 and shows that the same responsibility passes from Paul to Timothy and onward to every faithful teacher.

Romans 1:16

For I am not ashamed of the Good News of Christ, because it is the power of God for salvation for everyone who believes; for the Jew first, and also for the Greek.

(WEB)

Here Paul describes the gospel as the power of God for salvation, the same good news he calls the gospel of God’s glory in Timothy. Romans helps explain why Paul counts this message as something worth guarding and proclaiming with confidence.

A Short Prayer From 1 Timothy 1:11

Lord, you are the blessed God, full of glory and goodness, and you have made your good news known to us. Thank you that the gospel does not depend on our cleverness or strength but on what you have revealed about yourself. Help me to receive it with gratitude and to hold it with care. Where I am tempted to add to it or change it to suit my own comfort, turn my heart back to your truth. Make me faithful with what has been entrusted to me, so that others may see something of your glory through my life. Amen.
