This page gives you ready-to-use study questions for 2 Chronicles 22, with a leader’s answer or discussion note for each one. It is written for a small group, a Sunday class, or a person reading the chapter on their own. You can work through the questions in order or pick the ones that fit the time you have.

2 Chronicles 22 at a Glance

Chapter 22 tells the story of Ahaziah, a king of Judah who reigns only one year. The chapter opens with the violent deaths of his older brothers and then shows how his mother, Athaliah, and the royal advisers from the house of Ahab pull him into their wicked ways. Ahaziah joins an alliance with Israel’s King Joram, and through a set of events the chapter describes as being from God, he is caught up in Jehu’s judgment against Ahab’s house and is killed.

The second half turns to Athaliah, who seizes power by destroying the royal family. One child, Joash, is rescued by his aunt Jehoshabeath and her husband, the priest Jehoiada, and hidden in the temple for six years. The chapter closes in suspense, with the reader waiting for the hidden child to reappear.

Observation Questions

Use these questions first, before anyone offers an opinion. Ask the group to point to the words on the page and say only what the text states. Give people a minute of silence to look before you invite answers.

2 Chronicles 22:3

He also walked in the ways of Ahab’s house, because his mother was his counselor in acting wickedly.

(WEB)

Read this verse to set up the theme of counsel. It names the influence that shaped Ahaziah’s behavior, which gives the group a clear starting point for talking about the voices in their own lives.

2 Chronicles 22:4

He did that which was evil in the LORD’s sight, as did Ahab’s house, for they were his counselors after the death of his father, to his destruction.

(WEB)

This verse states the result of that counsel plainly. Reading it aloud helps the group see that the chapter judges actions by what they do in the LORD’s sight, not by how they seem to the people involved.

2 Chronicles 22:7

Now the destruction of Ahaziah was of God, in that he went to Joram; for when he had come, he went out with Jehoram against Jehu the son of Nimshi, whom the LORD had anointed to cut off Ahab’s house.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly to bring out the tension between human choices and God’s purpose. It is one of the most important sentences in the chapter for a discussion on divine sovereignty and personal responsibility.

2 Chronicles 22:9

He sought Ahaziah, and they caught him (now he was hiding in Samaria), and they brought him to Jehu, and killed him; and they buried him, for they said, “He is the son of Jehoshaphat, who sought the LORD with all his heart.” The house of Ahaziah had no power to hold the kingdom.

(WEB)

This verse contains the remembrance of Jehoshaphat’s faithfulness. Reading it aloud reminds the group that a family’s history of faith sets the backdrop for the story, even when the current generation falls away.

2 Chronicles 22:11

But Jehoshabeath, the king’s daughter, took Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stealthily rescued him from among the king’s sons who were slain, and put him and his nurse in the bedroom. So Jehoshabeath, the daughter of king Jehoram, the wife of Jehoiada the priest (for she was the sister of Ahaziah), hid him from Athaliah, so that she didn’t kill him.

(WEB)

This verse is the turning point of the chapter and the heart of its hope. Reading it aloud allows the group to pause on the courage of Jehoshabeath and on the quiet way God preserves the child who will later become king.

Memory Verse for 2 Chronicles 22

2 Chronicles 22:12

He was with them hidden in God’s house six years while Athaliah reigned over the land.

(WEB)

This verse closes the chapter with the image of a child kept safe in God’s house during years of darkness. It is a good verse to memorize because it reminds you that God’s hidden work continues even when the outcome is not yet visible.

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we come to you grateful that you see what is hidden from us and that you keep your promises even when the world looks dark. Thank you for the courage of people like Jehoshabeath who acted quietly for the good of others. Give us wise counsel, and help us to listen to voices that lead us toward you rather than away. Show us where you are calling us to take a quiet step of love this week, and give us the strength to take it. Where anyone here is waiting in a hidden season, hold them close and remind them that you are still at work. Amen.
