In 2 Chronicles 29, a young king named Hezekiah leads God’s people back to worship after years of neglect, and children learn that God always welcomes us back when we turn to Him. This lesson suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Big Idea

When we make a mess of things, we can come back to God, clean up our hearts, and worship Him together. He is always ready to welcome us home.

Memory Verse

2 Chronicles 29:11

My sons, don’t be negligent now; for the LORD has chosen you to stand before him, to minister to him, and that you should be his ministers, and burn incense.”

(WEB)

Ask the children to stand tall with their hands on their hearts while saying the verse together, then slowly bend down and stand back up. The motion shows that God chose these people to stand before Him, and it helps children picture standing ready to serve Him.

The Story: 2 Chronicles 29 for Kids

King Hezekiah was only twenty-five years old when he became king in Jerusalem. His father had let the Lord’s house fall into disrepair, and the doors were shut tight. Hezekiah knew this was wrong, so he wanted to fix it right away.

In the very first month of his reign, Hezekiah opened the doors of the Lord’s temple and repaired them. He called the priests and the Levites together and said, “Listen to me! Make yourselves clean, and clean out the dirty things from the holy place.” Everyone got to work.

The priests and Levites carried out all the messy, dirty things they had found. For eight days they cleaned the house of the Lord, and on the sixteenth day they were finished. They went to tell the king, and he went up to the temple early the next morning.

Hezekiah brought bulls, rams, lambs, and goats as offerings to say sorry and to thank God. Then he set up the Levites with cymbals, harps, and other instruments, just as King David had taught long ago. Music filled the house of the Lord.

All the people bowed down and worshiped. Then Hezekiah told them, “Now bring your thank offerings to the Lord!” The people brought gifts with glad hearts, and everyone rejoiced, because God had made it possible for them to come back to Him.

Read It Together

2 Chronicles 29:2

He did that which was right in the LORD’s eyes, according to all that David his father had done.

(WEB)

Point out that Hezekiah did what was right in the Lord’s eyes, just as his father David had. Ask children who taught them to do right, and remind them that good examples help us follow God.

2 Chronicles 29:10

Now it is in my heart to make a covenant with the LORD, the God of Israel, that his fierce anger may turn away from us.

(WEB)

Show children that Hezekiah wanted to make a covenant with God so His anger would turn away. Explain that a covenant is a promise, and that God keeps His promises to His people when they come back to Him.

2 Chronicles 29:36

Hezekiah and all the people rejoiced, because of that which God had prepared for the people; for the thing was done suddenly.

(WEB)

Highlight how Hezekiah and all the people rejoiced because of what God had prepared for them. Let children name something that makes them happy, and connect that joy to God’s goodness.

Talk About It

  • What did the people do when they found the Lord’s house in such a mess?
  • Why do you think Hezekiah wanted to clean the temple first before the offerings?
  • How can we keep our hearts clean like the temple was made clean?
  • What kinds of music help you feel close to God?
  • Who can you help today so they feel welcome to come back to church or to God?

Activity Ideas

Paper Plate Temple Drawing

Give each child a paper plate, crayons, and a pencil. Have them draw the doors of the temple standing open and add something clean and bright inside. Let them write or draw one thing they can do to keep their hearts clean for God.

Clean-Up Relay Game

Scatter small toys or paper scraps around the room, and set out a bin for each team. Teams race to carry the messes to the bin, like the Levites carried away the uncleanness. Cheer for everyone and end by singing a simple praise song together.

Take-Home Thank Offering Jar

Provide a small jar or cup and some paper strips. Ask children to write or draw one thing they are thankful for each week and drop it in the jar. At home, read the notes together as a family to remember God’s goodness.

Teacher Notes

This chapter shows that God welcomes His people back after seasons of neglect or sin. Hezekiah led the nation to confess, cleanse, and worship, and the result was great joy. For adults, it is a reminder that revival begins with humble obedience and restoring what was broken in our worship.

Avoid overstating to children that cleaning up earns God’s love. The story teaches that God gives us a fresh start and invites us back, not that we must make ourselves perfect first. Keep the focus on God’s welcoming character.

A Prayer to Close

Dear Lord, thank You for always welcoming us back when we wander away. Help us keep our hearts clean and ready to worship You. Fill our hearts with joy as we praise You together. Amen.
