In this lesson, children learn that God hears the prayers of His people and keeps His promises when they turn back to Him. This lesson suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.

Big Idea

God hears us when we pray, and He is good and faithful. When we turn back to Him, He forgives us and makes our land well again.

Memory Verse

2 Chronicles 7:14

If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

(WEB)

Have children cup both hands together like they are praying, then slowly open them wide, like a door opening. Do this each time you say the verse out loud, and let the children join in.

The Story: 2 Chronicles 7 for Kids

King Solomon had just finished building a beautiful house for God in Jerusalem. He stood before all the people and prayed a long, heartfelt prayer. When he finished, something amazing happened. Fire came down from heaven and burned up the sacrifices on the altar.

God’s glory filled the house so full that the priests could not even go inside. All the people fell down on the floor with their faces to the ground. They worshiped God and sang, “He is good, and His love lasts forever!”

King Solomon and all the people offered huge numbers of animals to God. Then they had a big party that lasted seven days, and then another seven days. The people went home happy and thankful for everything God had done for King David, King Solomon, and all of Israel.

That night, God appeared to Solomon in a dream and spoke to him. God said, “I have heard your prayer, and I have chosen this house as a place to be with My people.” God explained that if His people ever turned away from Him, He would not be happy. But if they humbled themselves, prayed, and turned away from their sins, God would hear them, forgive them, and heal their land.

God also promised that Solomon’s family would keep ruling as long as they walked faithfully with Him. But God warned that if they chose to worship other gods, the people would be sad, and the beautiful house would be destroyed. This story reminds us that God always keeps His word.

Read It Together

2 Chronicles 7:1

Now when Solomon had finished praying, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the LORD’s glory filled the house.

(WEB)

Point out how God answered Solomon’s prayer right away with fire from heaven. Ask the children to notice that God showed He was pleased with the house Solomon had built for Him.

2 Chronicles 7:3

All the children of Israel looked on, when the fire came down, and the LORD’s glory was on the house. They bowed themselves with their faces to the ground on the pavement, worshiped, and gave thanks to the LORD, saying, “For he is good; for his loving kindness endures for ever.”

(WEB)

Show the children how the people bowed down and gave thanks. Explain that when we see God doing amazing things, our response can be to worship Him and thank Him.

2 Chronicles 7:16

For now I have chosen and made this house holy, that my name may be there forever; and my eyes and my heart will be there perpetually.

(WEB)

Help the children see that God chose this place to be special to Him. Explain that God is always near to His people, and He pays attention to what they do and say.

Talk About It

  • What did the people do when they saw the fire come down from heaven?
  • How do you think King Solomon felt when God answered his prayer?
  • What did God say we need to do when we want Him to forgive us?
  • Why is it good to remember that God always keeps His promises?
  • What is one thing you could thank God for today?

Activity Ideas

Paper Plate Fire and Glory Picture

You will need paper plates, orange, yellow, and red crayons or markers, and glue with some cotton balls. Have each child draw a simple house in the middle of the plate. Then have them draw flames rising from the top and dab cotton balls around the house to show God’s glory filling it. Let children talk about what they drew while they work.

Humble and Pray Freeze Game

Gather the children in an open space. Call out “Humble!” and have everyone kneel or bow low, and call out “Pray!” and have them fold their hands. Call out “Turn!” and have them turn around in a full circle. Mix up the commands and see who can follow fastest. Explain that each action matches the steps God gave in the verse.

Prayer Jar for Home

You will need a clean jar, paper, and a pen or marker. Have each child write or draw one prayer request and one thing they are thankful for on separate slips of paper. Fold them up and place them in the jar. Encourage families to pull out a slip each day and pray together, remembering that God hears every prayer.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter shows that God takes prayer seriously and that He keeps His covenant promises, even when His people fail. The passage connects God’s presence in the temple with a call to real repentance, humility, and seeking Him. God’s willingness to forgive and heal is grounded in His character, not in the building itself.

Avoid suggesting to children that bad things happen only because someone prayed wrongly or failed to obey. The chapter speaks of God’s justice and mercy at the level of a nation, and children may misunderstand this as a direct cause for every hardship they see. Keep the focus on God’s faithfulness and love.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank You for hearing our prayers, just like You heard King Solomon’s. Help us to turn to You, to be humble, and to seek You every day. Thank You that You are good and Your love lasts forever. Amen.
