This page gives you ready-made study questions for 2 Peter 2, Peter’s warning about false teachers and God’s pattern of judgment and rescue. The questions are built for a small group, a Sunday class, or personal study, and each one comes with a leader’s note so you can move straight into discussion without preparing a separate summary.

2 Peter 2 at a Glance

The chapter opens with a warning that false teachers will slip in among believers, bring destructive teaching, and lead many into immoral living. Peter then gives three examples from Scripture to show that God does not let sin go unpunished: the angels who sinned, the flood in Noah’s day, and the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. He also shows that God rescues the godly, as he did with Noah and Lot.

From verse 10 onward, Peter describes the false teachers in detail, their arrogance, greed, and appetite for sin, and he uses vivid images such as waterless wells and a dog returning to its vomit. The chapter closes with a sober verdict: it would have been better never to know the way of righteousness than to know it and turn away.

Observation Questions

Use this set first, before anyone offers interpretation. Ask group members to point to the actual words of the text and resist the urge to explain yet. Read the verses aloud once, slowly, and let people answer from what is on the page.

2 Peter 2:1

But false prophets also arose among the people, as false teachers will also be among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, denying even the Master who bought them, bringing on themselves swift destruction.

This verse introduces the whole warning and tells the group that false teachers will arise among believers. Reading it first sets the tone for everything that follows and helps people hear Peter’s concern for the church.

2 Peter 2:9

The Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptation and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment…

(WEB)

Here Peter gives both comfort and warning in a single sentence, showing that God delivers the godly and keeps the unrighteous under judgment. Reading it aloud can steady a group that has just heard the harsher verses.

2 Peter 2:17-19

17 These are wells without water, clouds driven by a storm; for whom the blackness of darkness has been reserved forever. 18 For, uttering great swelling words of emptiness, they entice in the lusts of the flesh, by licentiousness, those who are indeed escaping from those who live in error; 19 promising them liberty, while they themselves are bondservants of corruption; for a man is brought into bondage by whoever overcomes him.

(WEB)

These verses picture false teachers as empty wells and storm clouds, and expose their promise of liberty. Hearing the imagery together helps the group feel the contrast between false promises and real freedom.

2 Peter 2:20-21

20 For if, after they have escaped the defilement of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in it and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. 21 For it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after knowing it, to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them.

(WEB)

This passage describes the serious danger of turning back after escaping the world’s defilement. Reading it together invites sober reflection on perseverance and the weight of knowing the truth.

2 Peter 2:14-15

14 Having eyes full of adultery, and who can’t cease from sin; enticing unsettled souls; having a heart trained in greed; children of cursing; 15 forsaking the right way, they went astray, having followed the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of wrongdoing…

(WEB)

These verses describe the character of those who lead others astray and name the way of Balaam. Reading them aloud helps the group recognize the patterns Peter warns against in their own time.

Memory Verse for 2 Peter 2

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we thank you that you know how to rescue those who belong to you, and we ask for discernment as we hear teaching and read Scripture. Keep us from being drawn away by empty words or by the appeal of what the world offers. Where any of us has begun to drift, draw that person back with patience and truth, and give the rest of us courage to speak gently and act faithfully. Help us to hold fast to the way of righteousness we have received, and to walk in it each day. Amen.
