children

This lesson teaches children that God helps them be strong and faithful, like a soldier, an athlete and a farmer who keep working hard for what is good. It is best for children aged 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Big Idea

God gives us strength by his grace, so we can keep doing what is right and share what we know about Jesus with others.

Memory Verse

2 Timothy 2:1

You therefore, my child, be strengthened in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Have children stand up tall, make a fist on each side, and then slowly lift both arms up like a strong soldier. Ask them to hold that pose while they say the verse together.

The Story: 2 Timothy 2 for Kids

Paul was an old man in prison, and he was writing a letter to his young friend Timothy. Paul loved Timothy like a son. He wanted Timothy to stay strong, even when things got hard. Paul told him that God’s kindness would help him keep going.

Paul wanted Timothy to share the things he had learned about Jesus with other faithful people. Those people could then teach others too. Paul said, “Keep teaching the good news, and pass it on.” Teaching is a little like handing a torch from one runner to the next.

Paul compared Timothy to a good soldier. A soldier does not get tangled up in every little thing, because he wants to please the one who called him. Paul also talked about an athlete who must play by the rules to win the prize. He talked about a farmer who works hard and gets to enjoy the first of the harvest.

Paul told Timothy that even though he was in chains, God’s message was not chained. Paul kept going for the sake of God’s chosen people. He reminded Timothy that Jesus had died and was raised to life, and that is the heart of the good news.

Paul also warned Timothy about people who argued about silly words and wasted time. He told Timothy to avoid empty talk and to be a worker who handles God’s truth carefully. God knows who belongs to him, and everyone who loves the Lord should turn away from wrong.

Paul ended by telling Timothy to run from foolish quarrels and to chase after goodness, faith, love and peace. He said the Lord’s servant should be kind and patient, even when correcting people who disagree, hoping that God will open their hearts to the truth.

Read It Together

2 Timothy 2:2

The things which you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit the same to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.

(WEB)

Point out that Paul wanted Timothy to pass the teaching on to people who would pass it on too. Ask children who taught them about Jesus, and thank God for those helpers.

2 Timothy 2:15

Give diligence to present yourself approved by God, a workman who doesn’t need to be ashamed, properly handling the Word of Truth.

(WEB)

Explain that a workman takes care with his tools and his work. Show how we can take care with God’s Word by reading it carefully and listening well.

2 Timothy 2:22

Flee from youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

(WEB)

Point out the two sides: run away from things that are wrong and chase after things that are good. Ask children to name one good thing they can pursue this week.

Talk About It

  • What kind of strength do you think Paul wanted Timothy to have?
  • Who is someone who helped you learn about Jesus, and how did they do it?
  • How is a soldier, an athlete, and a farmer like a Christian who keeps working for God?
  • What are some things that might be like “silly arguments” that waste our time?
  • What is one good thing you can chase after this week, like kindness, faith or peace?

Activity Ideas

Strong Soldier Craft

Give each child a paper plate, crayons, and a popsicle stick. Have them draw a face on the plate, then add a helmet or shield on the front. Tape the stick to the back so they can hold up their soldier. As they make it, talk about how God gives us strength to stand firm.

Pass the Torch Game

Gather the children in a circle and give one of them a rolled-up paper towel tube. Play music while they pass it around. When the music stops, the child holding the tube says one thing they learned about Jesus and passes it on. This shows how teaching is handed from one person to the next.

Take-Home Faithful Friend Card

Give each child an index card, a marker, and a sticker. Have them write “Be strong and faithful” on the front and draw a picture of someone who helps them. Encourage them to give the card to that person during the week. This helps children see that God uses people to encourage each other.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter is a charge to faithful, patient ministry. Paul urges Timothy to endure hardship, guard sound teaching, handle God’s Word carefully, and gently correct those who go astray, trusting God to bring repentance. The passage also reminds believers that God remains faithful even when we falter.

Avoid overstating to children that suffering or hard work earns God’s favor. Paul’s point is that God’s grace empowers us to persevere, not that we earn his love by enduring. Keep the focus on God’s strength and kindness.

A Prayer to Close

Dear Jesus, thank you for being our strength and helping us stay faithful. Help us to be like good soldiers, hardworking friends, and careful learners of your Word. Please help us share your love with others and do what is good. Amen.
