2 Timothy 4:22 is Paul’s closing blessing to Timothy, a prayer that the Lord Jesus Christ would be present with Timothy’s inner self and that God’s undeserved favor would rest on him. The apostle Paul wrote these words near the end of his last letter, addressed to his young colleague Timothy, who was serving as a leader in the church at Ephesus.

The Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Grace be with you. Amen.

What 2 Timothy 4:22 Means

The verse opens with a wish that “the Lord Jesus Christ” would “be with your spirit.” The word “spirit” points to the inner person, the part of you that thinks, feels, decides and prays. Paul is not asking for a vague sense of comfort. He is asking that Christ himself would be close to Timothy at the deepest level of who he is, especially now that Paul was near the end of his life and Timothy would soon be carrying the work alone.

The second sentence, “Grace be with you,” is shorter but just as full. Grace means God’s kindness given freely, not earned. Paul wants Timothy to know that he does not face his task on his own merit. The verse ends with “Amen,” a word meaning “so be it,” which turns the whole blessing into a settled prayer rather than a passing hope.

What the verse does not do is offer a formula that guarantees any particular outcome in Timothy’s circumstances. It expresses a pastoral desire and a confident trust in God’s presence and favor. It describes the relationship Paul wanted Timothy to enjoy with Christ, rather than a promise about his health, his safety or his success.

The Context of 2 Timothy 4:22

Second Timothy is traditionally attributed to Paul, written while he was imprisoned in Rome and facing execution. The letter is personal and urgent. Paul asks Timothy to come to him, to bring his cloak and his scrolls, and to keep preaching the word faithfully even when others have turned away. The audience is Timothy alone, though the letter was clearly meant to be read and passed on among believers.

The verses just before the blessing are a list of greetings and names: Prisca, Aquila, Onesiphorus, Erastus, Trophimus, Eubulus, Pudens, Linus and Claudia. Paul also reports that some have deserted him. Against that backdrop of loneliness and loss, the closing blessing reads as the sincere comfort of a man who knows he is not alone, and who wants Timothy to know the same. It turns a list of goodbyes into a final assurance that Christ and grace remain.

A Short Prayer From 2 Timothy 4:22

Lord Jesus Christ, I ask that you would be with my spirit today, in the quiet places of my heart where no one else can see. Where I feel weak, steady me. Where I feel alone, remind me that you are near. Pour your grace over the people I will meet, and over the choices I will make, so that I can live faithfully even when the way is hard. Let your favor be the foundation under everything I do. Amen.
