2 Corinthians 9:10 means that God is the one who provides everything a generous person needs, both to give and to keep growing in goodness. Paul promises that the God who gives a farmer seed and bread will also give you resources to keep sowing and to see your good works multiply. Paul wrote this to the church in Corinth, encouraging them to finish the collection they had promised for struggling believers in Jerusalem.

Now may he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food, supply and multiply your seed for sowing, and increase the fruits of your righteousness…

What 2 Corinthians 9:10 Means

Paul starts with a picture every farming family understood. A farmer cannot harvest without first having seed, and he cannot eat through the year without bread. Paul says that God is the one who supplies both. The image is of an ordinary, daily dependence on God’s provision, the kind people rarely think about until a harvest fails.

The verse then turns from the farm to the believer. The same God who supplies seed for sowing will supply and multiply the Corinthians’ seed, meaning the resources and opportunities they have to give. The “fruits of your righteousness” are the good results of their faithful living, especially their generosity. Paul is saying that God does not only meet needs once; he enlarges our capacity so that we can keep doing good.

It is important to be clear about what the verse does not say. It does not promise that every believer will become rich or that faithful giving will always bring visible financial reward. Paul is speaking to a community about generosity, trust and God’s faithfulness in providing what is needed for good work.

The Context of 2 Corinthians 9:10

Second Corinthians is one of Paul’s letters to the church he founded in Corinth, a busy port city with a mix of wealthy and poor members. Paul wrote it to encourage them and to address tensions in the relationship. Chapters 8 and 9 focus on a collection Paul was gathering from Gentile churches to help believers in Jerusalem who were in need, and he had been bragging to other churches about Corinth’s eagerness to give.

The verses just before 9:10 urge each person to give cheerfully, not grudgingly, because God loves a cheerful giver, and they promise that God is able to make all grace abound. Verses 11 through 13 continue by saying that this generosity produces thanksgiving to God and glorifies him. Read in that setting, verse 10 is not a general promise about harvests but a reassurance to people who are being asked to give and who may wonder whether they will have enough.

Key Phrases in 2 Corinthians 9:10

Philippians 4:19

My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

This verse echoes the same confidence that God supplies what his people need. Paul writes it to the Philippians after they sent him gifts, and it shows that the God who provides for us in our needs will continue to meet them in Christ. It helps readers see that God’s generous provision is consistent across Paul’s letters.

Matthew 6:33

But seek first God’s Kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well.

(WEB)

Jesus teaches here that believers should seek God’s kingdom and righteousness first, trusting that other needs will be met. This connects with 2 Corinthians 9:10 by placing trust in God’s care at the center of a life of generosity and right living, rather than anxious self-reliance.

A Short Prayer From 2 Corinthians 9:10

Lord, you are the one who gives the seed and the bread, and you are the one who makes our small efforts grow. Thank you for the resources you have already placed in my hands. Give me a generous heart, so that I can share what you have given without fear or grudging. Multiply the good I am able to do, and let the fruits of my life bring honor to you. Help me trust that you will keep supplying what I need to keep sowing. Amen.
