1 Timothy 1:5 says that the purpose behind every instruction God gives is love that flows from a clean heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith. In plain terms, Paul is telling Timothy that the right measure of any teaching is whether it produces love, not whether it produces arguments or puzzles. The apostle Paul wrote this letter to his younger co-worker Timothy, whom he calls his true child in the faith, while Timothy was serving the church in Ephesus.

But the goal of this command is love, out of a pure heart and a good conscience and sincere faith…

What 1 Timothy 1:5 Means

The verse begins with “the goal of this command,” which points back to the charge Paul has just given Timothy to stop false teachers from spreading useless ideas. Paul is saying that the aim of that charge is not to win debates or to show who knows more. The aim is love, the kind that seeks another person’s good and reflects God’s own character.

Paul then names three conditions that make such love possible: a pure heart, a good conscience, and sincere faith. A pure heart means a heart not divided by hidden motives. A good conscience means an inner life that is honest before God. Sincere faith means trust that is real rather than performed. Paul does not say these three things guarantee loving behavior every time, but he does present them as the soil in which love can grow.

What the verse does not promise is that correct doctrine alone will produce a loving church. Paul is clear elsewhere that teaching can be accurate and still be empty. This verse asks us to measure teaching by its fruit, and it places love at the center of what God wants to see in His people.

The Context of 1 Timothy 1:5

First Timothy is one of the letters Paul wrote to pastoral leaders, and it addresses problems in the church at Ephesus. Verses 3 and 4 describe certain men who were teaching different doctrines and getting caught up in myths and endless genealogies. These teachings created quarrels rather than building up believers in God’s plan, which operates through faith.

Read against that background, verse 5 becomes a corrective. Paul has just pointed out what false teaching leads to, namely disputes and vain talk, and now he states what true teaching leads to, namely love. The verses that follow in verses 6 through 8 show that some teachers had missed this mark and wanted to be teachers of the law without understanding what they were saying. Verse 5 therefore reads as the standard by which Timothy should test every teacher and every teaching.

Key Phrases in 1 Timothy 1:5

1 Corinthians 13:1-3

1 If I speak with the languages of men and of angels, but don’t have love, I have become sounding brass, or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but don’t have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give away all my goods to feed the poor, and if I give my body to be burned, but don’t have love, it profits me nothing.

Paul’s famous passage on love makes clear that knowledge, eloquence, and even sacrificial acts mean nothing without love. It fills out what he means when he calls love the goal of the command, showing that love is the true measure of spiritual maturity.

Titus 1:5

I left you in Crete for this reason, that you would set in order the things that were lacking, and appoint elders in every city, as I directed you…

In this letter Paul also writes to a young leader about putting sound order into the church. Reading it alongside 1 Timothy 1:5 shows that Paul consistently wanted church leaders to build up believers in godly character and not leave them confused or quarrelsome.

A Short Prayer From 1 Timothy 1:5

Father, you have made known that the goal of every instruction in your word is love. Cleanse my heart of hidden motives and give me a conscience that is clear before you. Let my faith be real and not a performance, so that what I know about you leads me to treat others with patience and kindness. When I am tempted to win arguments instead of serving people, remind me of what your commands are for. Shape my life so that love flows from me naturally, as a witness to your grace. Amen.
