Joshua 1:7 tells you to be strong and very courageous, and to carefully do everything God’s law commands, without drifting from it in either direction. God gives this charge to Joshua, the man chosen to lead Israel after Moses died, as Israel stands on the edge of the promised land. The words come directly from the Lord, who speaks to Joshua at the start of his leadership.

Only be strong and very courageous. Be careful to observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded you. Don’t turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go.

What Joshua 1:7 Means

The verse begins with a command: “Only be strong and very courageous.” The word “only” narrows the focus. Joshua does not need to be strong in every area of life. What matters most is the courage to stay faithful to God’s instructions, even when the task ahead looks enormous. The strength described here is moral and spiritual before it is military.

Next comes the heart of the charge: be careful to act according to all the law that Moses gave. The instruction is comprehensive. Joshua is not invited to pick the parts of God’s word he finds convenient. He is asked to take the whole of it seriously and to put it into practice in daily decisions.

The verse closes with a picture of a road: do not turn aside to the right or the left. Faithfulness here is a straight path, not a zigzag between obedience and compromise. The promise attached is “good success wherever you go.” This is not a guarantee that every plan will work out as hoped. It is a statement that a life lived in step with God’s word will be blessed and will prosper in the ways that matter most, even when outward results are mixed.

The Context of Joshua 1:7

The book of Joshua takes its name from the man at its center, who succeeded Moses as leader of Israel. Tradition credits him with much of the writing, though the book was likely shaped and finished at a later date. Its first audience was the people of Israel, who had wandered for forty years in the wilderness and were now poised to enter Canaan under new leadership.

Joshua 1:4 to 10 frames the verse. God promises the land, promises his presence (“As I was with Moses, so I will be with you”), and repeats the call to be strong and courageous. Verse 8 then explains how that strength is kept alive: by keeping the book of the law on the lips and meditating on it day and night. Read this way, verse 7 is not a stand-alone motivational line. It is part of a pattern in which God’s presence and God’s word work together, and courage grows out of trust in both.

Key Phrases in Joshua 1:7

Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”

This verse comes from Moses’ final words to Israel and echoes the same call to courage. It shows that the command to be strong was not new with Joshua but rested on God’s steady presence with his people from the beginning.

Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.

This verse describes God’s word as a lamp for the feet and a light for the path. It helps explain Joshua 1:7’s picture of a straight road, showing that God’s word is the guide that keeps a person from stumbling in the dark.

A Short Prayer From Joshua 1:7

Lord, you have called me to be strong and courageous, not because I am strong in myself, but because you are with me wherever I go. Give me the courage to take your word seriously in the small choices of this day, and the wisdom to recognize when I am drifting to one side or the other. Keep my heart steady on the straight path, and let my obedience come from trust in you. Thank you for your faithful presence. Amen.
