Proverbs 5:18 tells a husband to find joy and blessing in his marriage, especially in the wife he has been committed to since his youth. The verse is not a command to chase pleasure, but an invitation to build delight inside a faithful, lifelong bond. It is spoken by a father to his son in the book of Proverbs, a teacher passing on wisdom about sexual faithfulness and self-control.

Let your spring be blessed. Rejoice in the wife of your youth.

What Proverbs 5:18 Means

The verse opens with the image of a “spring,” which in ancient Hebrew thinking pictured a household’s source of life, strength and intimacy. To say a spring should be “blessed” is to ask that this source of life be good, rightly used and protected. The writer is saying that a man’s deepest enjoyment of sexual love has a proper place, and that place is within his own marriage.

The phrase “rejoice in the wife of your youth” is the heart of the verse. The word “rejoice” means to find real gladness, not grudging duty. The “wife of your youth” points to the woman a man married early on, the one who has shared his years and grown with him. The verse assumes that long-term commitment can be a source of ongoing delight, not just routine.

What the verse does not promise is that marriage will always feel exciting or that every season will be easy. It describes an attitude to cultivate and a way of life to choose. It is wise counsel about where to find satisfaction, not a guarantee that satisfaction will arrive on schedule.

The Context of Proverbs 5:18

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings traditionally associated with Solomon and gathered for the instruction of the young. Chapter 5 is a warning against adultery and sexual immorality, which the teacher presents as a path that ends in ruin. The audience is a young man who is being urged to guard his heart and his body against seductive but destructive relationships.

Just before the verse, the teacher uses the picture of drinking water from your own well and not from the streets. Just after it, he speaks of a loving doe and a graceful deer and tells the son to be captivated always by his wife’s love. Read in this setting, Proverbs 5:18 is the positive side of a warning: faithfulness is not merely restraint, but the wise choice to find deep joy where it was rightly placed.

Key Phrases in Proverbs 5:18

This verse describes the LORD as a witness to the covenant between a man and the wife of his youth. It deepens Proverbs 5:18 by showing that the marriage bond is not merely personal preference but a sacred promise held before God.

Hebrews 13:4

Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the bed be undefiled: but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers.

A Short Prayer From Proverbs 5:18

Lord, you made love and marriage good, and you know the desires that stir in my heart. Bless the places in my life that flow from you, and turn away whatever would draw me toward what harms those I love. Help me to rejoice in the one you gave me, to remember our early promises, and to keep choosing her with gladness each day. Give us patience, tenderness and joy in the years still ahead. Amen.
