Colossians 2:12 teaches that when a believer is baptized, they are joined to Christ in his death and burial, and through faith in God’s power they are also joined to his resurrection. The verse is about what God has done for you through Christ, not about something you have to earn. Paul wrote it to the church in Colossae, a city in what is now western Turkey, to correct people who were tempted to add rules and rituals to the good news they had already received.

Having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.

What Colossians 2:12 Means

Paul begins with the picture of burial. In the ancient world, burial was the final step that confirmed a death was real. When he says believers were “buried with him in baptism,” he means that baptism pictures the end of the old life: the way of living apart from God is put to rest in the water, just as Christ’s body was laid in the tomb. The sinful self is not patched up but set aside.

The verse then turns to resurrection. Those who were buried with Christ were also “raised with him.” The new life is not a self-improvement project. It is a life given by the same power that raised Jesus from the dead. Paul makes the connection explicit: this happens “through faith in the working of God,” meaning trust in what God is doing, not in your own ability to keep yourself clean.

What the verse does not say is that baptism works like a magic charm, or that a person is saved by the water itself. Paul ties the whole event to faith and to God’s action. It also does not describe a feeling you must have each time you go under the water. It describes a standing you receive: you belong to Christ, and his victory over death is yours to rely on.

The Context of Colossians 2:12

Colossians is one of the letters traditionally attributed to Paul, written during one of his imprisonments, probably in the early 60s AD. Paul had not personally founded the church at Colossae, but he cared for its members and was writing to address teachers who were pressing them toward legalistic practices, special spiritual visions, and an emphasis on angelic powers. Paul’s answer is that Christ alone is sufficient.

The verses just before this one describe Christ as the fullness of God in bodily form and say that believers are “made full” in him. Verses 13 to 15 that follow explain that God has forgiven our sins, canceled the record of debts against us, and disarmed the powers that opposed us, all through the cross. Read in that setting, verse 12 is not a standalone teaching on baptism. It is one part of a larger argument that salvation is complete in Christ, so no additional religious performance is needed to secure it.

Key Phrases in Colossians 2:12

Romans 6:4

We were buried therefore with him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also might walk in newness of life.

(WEB)

Paul develops the same burial and resurrection pattern in Romans, explaining that believers walk in newness of life because they have been united with Christ. Reading it alongside Colossians 2:12 shows that this is a consistent theme across his letters.

Ephesians 2:5-6

5 Even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up with him, and made us to sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus…

(WEB)

These verses speak of God making believers alive together with Christ and seating them with him in the heavenly places. They extend the logic of Colossians 2:12 from the moment of new life to the full reality of standing with Christ in God’s presence.

A Short Prayer From Colossians 2:12

Lord, thank you that my old life was laid to rest with Christ and that you have raised me to a new life in him. I confess how often I still reach for my own rules, my own proof, and my own record to feel secure. Teach me to rest in your working rather than in my performance. When I feel the weight of my past, remind me that I was buried and raised with Jesus. Let my faith in your power shape how I live today. Amen.
