1 Thessalonians 3:12 is a prayer that God would make the believers in Thessalonica grow in love, both for one another and for everyone around them. The apostle Paul wrote it to the young church in Thessalonica, a city in northern Greece, after Timothy had brought him encouraging news about their faith.

And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we also do toward you…

What 1 Thessalonians 3:12 Means

The verse begins with “the Lord,” which in this letter refers to Jesus, and the request is that he would “make you to increase and abound.” Paul is not asking the Thessalonians to try harder on their own. He is asking God to supply the growth, the way a gardener cannot make a plant grow but can trust that the living root will push upward. Love here is treated as something that can be enlarged over time.

Paul then names the direction of that love: “one toward another,” meaning fellow believers, and “toward all men,” meaning people outside the church as well. The phrase “even as we also do toward you” points to the example Paul and his companions had set. They loved the Thessalonians with a genuine, practical affection, and they hoped that same love would spread through the whole congregation.

The verse does not promise that love will feel easy or that every relationship will be warm. It describes a prayer and a direction of growth. It assumes that love is something a person can practice, deepen and extend, and it locates the source of that deepening in God rather than in human willpower alone.

The Context of 1 Thessalonians 3:12

First Thessalonians is one of the earliest letters Paul wrote, probably from Corinth around the early 50s AD. The church in Thessalonica was young and had faced persecution soon after its founding. Paul had been forced to leave the city quickly, and he was anxious to know whether these new believers would hold firm. Chapter 3 records Timothy’s return with a report that their faith and love were strong.

The verses just before this one, in 3:9 and 3:10, show Paul overflowing with thankfulness and praying night and day to see them again. Verse 11 asks God to direct his way back to them. Verse 12 then turns the prayer toward the Thessalonians themselves, and verse 13 looks ahead to the coming of Jesus. Read in this setting, the request for growing love is part of a larger hope that the church will be found blameless when Christ returns.

Philippians 1:9-10

9 This I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and all discernment; 10 so that you may approve the things that are excellent; that you may be sincere and without offense to the day of Christ…

In this prayer Paul asks that the love of the Philippian believers would abound more and more, joined with knowledge and discernment. It mirrors the 1 Thessalonians request and reminds us that growing love is also growing wisdom about how to love well.

A Short Prayer From 1 Thessalonians 3:12

Lord, you are the one who makes things grow, and I bring you the parts of my heart that feel small or stingy toward others. Increase my love, Father, so that it is not limited to the people who are easy for me to love. Let it overflow toward my family, my church, my neighbors and even those who have hurt me.

Help me to trust that the growth you give is real, even when I cannot see it from day to day. Make my love steady, honest and generous, and let it point others toward you. Amen.
