1 Timothy 5:6 says that a person who lives for pleasure is spiritually dead, even while still breathing. Paul is describing the difference between a life centered on God and a life centered on self-indulgence, not condemning ordinary enjoyment of good things.

Paul wrote this letter to Timothy, a younger pastor he had mentored and left in charge of the church at Ephesus. The verse appears in a passage giving Timothy guidance on how the church should care for widows.

But she who gives herself to pleasure is dead while she lives.

What 1 Timothy 5:6 Means

The phrase “gives herself to pleasure” describes someone whose whole attention and energy flow toward self-gratification. The word points to a settled direction of the heart, not an occasional treat or a moment of rest. Paul is talking about someone who has made comfort or indulgence the center of her life.

The second half, “dead while she lives,” uses the language of spiritual death. Scripture often speaks of people who are alive physically but cut off from the life God gives. Paul is saying that a self-absorbed life has no real vitality, even when it looks busy or happy from the outside.

The verse does not say that pleasure is sinful or that believers must live joylessly. It also does not promise that faithful widows will be free of hardship. It draws a contrast: one life is oriented toward God and prayer, and the other is oriented toward self, and Paul names the consequences of each.

The Context of 1 Timothy 5:6

First Timothy is one of the Pastoral Letters, traditionally attributed to Paul and addressed to Timothy as a leader in the young church at Ephesus. Its concerns are order, sound teaching, and the character of those who serve in the church. Chapter 5 deals with how believers of different ages and circumstances should treat one another.

Verses 3 through 9 address the church’s support of widows. Verse 5 describes a true widow as one who “has her hope set on God, and continues in petitions and prayers night and day.” Verse 6 sets her alongside the contrasting figure, the one devoted to pleasure. Read this way, the verse is a description of two ways of living, not a standalone warning against enjoying life.

Key Phrases in 1 Timothy 5:6

Psalm 16:11

You will show me the path of life. In your presence is fullness of joy. In your right hand there are pleasures forever more.

(WEB)

This psalm locates true fullness in God’s presence rather than in passing pleasures. It shows the positive side of what Paul describes, where joy is found in fellowship with God and not in self-indulgence.

Romans 8:6

For the mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace…

(WEB)

Paul contrasts a mind set on the flesh with a mind set on the Spirit, naming death and life as the outcomes. This verse parallels 1 Timothy 5:6 by tying the direction of a person’s focus to whether they experience life or death.

A Short Prayer From 1 Timothy 5:6

Father, you know how easily my heart turns toward comfort and distraction when I am tired or afraid. Show me where I have been living for pleasure instead of for you, and forgive me for the places I have settled for less than life with you. Turn my hope back toward you each morning, and let my prayers be as steady as my wants have been. Give me a life that is truly alive in your presence. Amen.
