Romans 4:25 teaches that Jesus died because of our sins and was raised from the dead so that we could be declared right with God. Paul wrote these words to the church in Rome, a mixed community of Jewish and Gentile believers, to show them how God’s rescue plan fits together.
Who was delivered up for our trespasses, and was raised for our justification.

What Romans 4:25 Means
The verse has two halves that mirror each other. The first half says Jesus was “delivered up” for our trespasses. The word “trespasses” means falls, wrong steps, or failures to live as God intends, and “delivered up” points to Jesus being handed over to death, which Paul elsewhere describes as God’s own purpose and plan, not merely the act of wicked men.
The second half says he was “raised for our justification.” Justification is the legal word for being declared innocent and accepted. Paul is saying that the resurrection was not an afterthought. It was the public verdict that the sacrifice was accepted and that those who trust in Christ now stand righteous before God.
Notice what the verse does not say. It does not promise that believers will never struggle with sin again, and it does not describe a feeling of being forgiven. It states a completed fact about what Christ has accomplished, which believers receive by faith.
The Context of Romans 4:25
Paul wrote Romans around the middle of the first century, and the letter is his most systematic explanation of the gospel. In chapter 4 he uses Abraham as his example. Abraham was counted righteous because he believed God, long before any law was given. Paul then makes the point that the same principle applies to believers today: righteousness is credited to those who believe in the God who raised Jesus.
Read in that setting, verse 25 is the hinge of the argument. The verses just before it explain that Abraham’s faith was credited to him, and the verses just after move into the peace and hope that flow from being justified. Verse 25 names the foundation for all of it, which is the death and resurrection of Christ.
Key Phrases in Romans 4:25
Romans 5:1
Being therefore justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ…

Paul builds directly on verse 25 here, explaining that being justified by faith brings peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. The verse shows what justification produces in the life of a believer.
1 Corinthians 15:17
If Christ has not been raised, your faith is vain; you are still in your sins.

This verse gives the other side of the resurrection truth. If Christ was not raised, faith would be futile and sins would remain unforgiven, which shows why the resurrection in Romans 4:25 is central to the gospel.
A Short Prayer From Romans 4:25
Lord, thank you that Jesus was handed over for my failures and raised so that I could stand before you as righteous. I confess that I still carry guilt and shame, and I often try to earn what you have already given. Help me rest in what Christ has finished and live from that settled truth today. Teach me to extend the same grace to others that I have received. Amen.
