Luke 2:51 tells us that after a difficult moment in the temple, Jesus went home with his parents to Nazareth and lived under their authority. It also says his mother held onto everything that had happened, turning it over quietly in her heart. The verse is spoken by Luke, the narrator of the Gospel, and it is about Jesus and his family, especially Mary, after the twelve-year-old boy was found teaching in Jerusalem.
And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth. He was subject to them, and his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

What Luke 2:51 Means
The phrase “he went down with them” describes a choice that looked ordinary. Jesus had just explained to his anxious parents that he must be in his Father’s house, yet he did not stay in Jerusalem to press that point. He left the temple and traveled the roughly seventy miles back to a small village, where he returned to daily life as a child in a working family.
“He was subject to them” is the heart of the verse. The Greek word means to be under someone’s authority, and Luke uses it to show that Jesus, who is God’s Son, honored his earthly parents by submitting to them. The verse does not explain every question about his inner awareness, and it does not suggest that obedience earns anything. It simply records a real pattern of humble living in a home.
The Context of Luke 2:51
Luke wrote his Gospel for a reader he addresses as Theophilus, likely a Gentile believer who wanted an orderly account of the events of Jesus’ life. Luke was a companion of Paul and was traditionally regarded as a physician, and he gives unusual attention to Mary, to the births of John and Jesus, and to the household details of early Christian life.
Verses 48 through 50 show the tension of the scene: Mary speaks with worry, Jesus answers with a claim about his Father, and his parents do not fully understand. Verse 52 then says Jesus grew in wisdom, stature and favor with God and people. Reading 51 between those two verses shows that Jesus’ growing understanding of his mission did not remove him from ordinary family obedience. It was lived out in a home in Nazareth.
Key Phrases in Luke 2:51
Luke 2:52
And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

Verse 52 completes the picture by describing Jesus’ steady growth in wisdom, stature and favor. It shows that his life in Nazareth was a time of real development, not a waiting room before his public ministry.
Ephesians 6:1
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.

Paul calls children to obey their parents in the Lord, which echoes the pattern Luke describes in Jesus’ home. The two passages together show that submission within family life is a theme the New Testament takes seriously.
A Short Prayer From Luke 2:51
Lord, you were not too great to live under human authority, and you chose a quiet home in Nazareth as the place to grow. Teach me to honor the people you have placed over me, even when I feel ready for more. When my heart is full of questions I cannot answer yet, help me to keep your words close and to trust that you are at work. Make me faithful in the ordinary days, and give me a patient spirit like Mary’s. Amen.
