This morning prayer is written for the moment you want to bring your brother before God before the day gets going. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words. It works well first thing, while the coffee is still hot and the house is quiet.

Morning Prayer for My Brother

Lord, I start this day by bringing my brother to you. You know where he is going today, the work in front of him, the people he will talk to, and the decisions that will press on him before supper. Be with him in the small things, the commute, the first email, the conversation he has been dreading. Steady his thoughts and keep his heart soft toward you and toward the people around him.

Father, you also know what he carries when no one else is looking. Some of it is worry about money, his health, or the people he loves. Some of it may be regret over something he cannot undo. Meet him in those places. Remind him that he is known and loved by you, and that he does not have to earn your attention. Give him enough rest in the night and enough peace this morning to take the next step well.

I also ask that you guard him from fear and from the kind of pride that makes it hard to ask for help. Give him patience with the people who frustrate him and kindness toward the ones who need it most. Let him see your hand in ordinary moments today, and let my own life point him back toward you. Thank you that you are awake before us and that your faithfulness starts again with each sunrise. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my brother is heading into this day, and I cannot carry all of it for him. Go before him into every meeting, every drive, and every quiet hour. Give him wisdom for what he must decide and courage for what he must face. Hold him close and let him feel your nearness. Thank you that he belongs to you today and every day. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this over your brother as you think about his comings and goings. Ask the Lord to guard his life as he leaves the house and returns to it, and to keep watch over the choices he makes between those two moments.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Use this passage to thank God for his mercy, which is new each morning. Pray that your brother will wake to that fresh mercy and recognize it in the ordinary gift of another day.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Bring your brother’s anxieties to God by name and ask that the peace that passes understanding would settle over his thoughts. Pray that this peace would guard his heart when the day becomes crowded or uncertain.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Pray that your brother would find strength in the Lord for the tasks that feel too heavy. Ask for renewed energy and steadiness for the long hours ahead, not just for the first hour of the morning.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Ask God to help your brother trust him with the decisions he faces today, especially the ones he cannot yet see clearly. Pray that he would acknowledge the Lord in each choice and trust that his paths will be made straight.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer while you are still at the kitchen table or on the edge of your bed, before the phone and the news start asking for your attention. Keep a cup of tea or coffee in your hands to remind yourself to slow down. If you can, text your brother a short line afterward, something like “praying for you today,” so he knows the prayer has a face and a person behind it.

If other family members or friends share your concern for your brother, invite them to pray the same words or add their own. You might keep a note with his name and today’s date on the refrigerator or in your phone, and return to it when you check in with him later. Over time you will start to notice how God answers, and that noticing becomes its own kind of prayer.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your brother and keep him through the hours ahead. May the Lord’s face shine on him, bring him peace in what is hard, and give him grace for each person he meets today. Go with him, Lord, and bring him home to rest in your care.
