This prayer is for the end of the day, when your body is ready for sleep but your mind has not yet let go of the hours behind you. Pray it in bed, in a chair by the lamp, or while lying in the dark with your eyes closed. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words what is on your heart tonight.

Prayer for a Restful Night

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring it to you. I bring the conversations I replayed, the things I did not finish, and the worries I carried home with me. Some of them I cannot solve tonight, and I am tired of holding them by myself. Take them from my hands now. Let them rest with you, the one who never sleeps and never runs out of care.

Quiet my thoughts when they start to race. Slow my breathing and steady my heart. If my body is restless, settle it. If my mind is busy with tomorrow, remind me that tomorrow is also yours. Guard this house and everyone sleeping in it, and keep away whatever would frighten or harm us in the dark. Let the night hold us the way a good parent holds a child who has finally stopped crying.

Thank you for the good parts of this day, even the small ones: a warm meal, a kind word, a moment of laughter, the strength to get up and keep going. Thank you that I do not have to earn my rest. Give me sleep that refreshes me, and wake me in the morning ready to receive whatever grace you have prepared. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am worn out and my mind will not stop. Take what I have carried today and hold it for me. Calm my heart, quiet my thoughts, and keep watch over my sleep. Let me rest in your care until morning. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this slowly before you close your eyes. Ask God to let this be true for you tonight, that you can lie down without fear and trust that safety does not depend on your staying awake.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Let this verse remind you that rest is a gift and not a reward for finishing everything. Pray that God would give sleep to the people you love and to yourself, without guilt for the work still undone.

Psalm 3:5

I laid myself down and slept. I awakened; for the LORD sustains me.

(WEB)

This psalm was written by someone who was surrounded by threats. Pray it as a declaration that God sustains you through the night, and ask him to steady you when you wake in the early hours.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus speaks to those who are weary and burdened. Bring your exhaustion to him in prayer, naming the specific loads you are carrying, and ask him to give you the rest only he can provide.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul connects anxiety with prayer and peace. Turn each worry into a request you speak aloud, and ask God to guard your heart and mind so that you can release them and sleep.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer at the end of your evening, after the lights are low and before you reach for your phone or pick up any last task. Sit on the edge of the bed or stay in your usual chair, and hold something in your hands, such as a folded blanket, a cup of water, or your own open palm resting on your chest. Let the physical act slow you down, so that prayer becomes part of your settling and not one more item on the list.

If your mind keeps drifting, pause and pray one line from the shorter version, then return to the longer prayer. A spouse, a roommate, or a friend could also pray it with you on the phone or across the room, taking turns with each paragraph. Some nights you may finish the whole prayer in a minute, and some nights you may fall asleep halfway through. Both are faithful ways to come before God at the close of the day.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord, who keeps watch over Israel and never grows drowsy, guard you through this night. May you lie down in peace and wake up refreshed, carrying a lighter load into the morning. May the one who gives rest to the weary hold you close until the sun rises.
