This bedtime prayer for my husband is written for the quiet end of the day, when the house settles and you want to hand the last hours to God before you sleep. Pray it aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and add the names, worries and thanks that are specific to your marriage. It works on a night when you are both in bed, when he is working a late shift, or when you are praying from another room.

Bedtime Prayer for My Husband

Father, thank you for the day we have just finished. Thank you for the work my husband did with his hands and his mind, for the conversations he had, and for the moments of patience and kindness that no one else saw. Where he was tired, rest him. Where he was frustrated, calm him. Where he fell short, forgive him, and help him rest in that forgiveness instead of replaying his mistakes in the dark.

Watch over him while he sleeps. Guard his body and his heart, and keep away the fears that tend to rise at night about money, his health, his job, his parents, or the future of our family. Give him a sense that you are awake even when he is not. Remind him that he does not have to carry everything alone, and that you are already at work in the things he cannot fix tonight. Be near to him in his dreams and let his sleep be deep and restful.

Lord, bless our marriage in the hours we are apart from each other. Keep us kind toward one another in the morning, and help us remember that we are on the same side. Thank you for giving him to me. Let him wake refreshed, ready for the day ahead, and aware of your love. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, thank you for my husband and for the day you gave us. Please give him rest tonight and protect him while he sleeps. Calm whatever is weighing on his mind, and keep us close in heart even when we are apart. Let him wake to your faithfulness tomorrow. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly and pray it over your husband as he lies down. Ask God to give him the kind of peace that lets him sleep without fear of what tomorrow holds.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Use this verse to release the pressure your husband carries about work and provision. Thank God that rest is a gift from him and ask him to teach your husband to receive it.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Pray this over his sleep and his safety. Ask the Lord who never slumbers to keep watch over him through the night while he is unable to watch over himself.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring to God the burdens your husband has not named out loud. Ask Jesus to draw him into rest, especially from the anxieties he is too tired to explain.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray this for the worries that keep your husband awake. Ask God to replace his anxious thoughts with the peace that guards the heart and mind in Christ.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a moment when you are both settled, such as after the lights are off and before either of you falls asleep. Sit or lie beside him if he is willing, and rest a hand on his arm or shoulder while you speak. If he is already asleep, you can pray quietly with your hand near him or just in your own mind, and God will hear you just the same.

Invite others to join you. A close friend, a small group, or your pastor can pray this with you once a week, or you can pray it together with your husband if he is open to it. Keep a short list beside the bed of anything specific he is facing, so that you can add those details as the season changes.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep your husband safe through this night and fill his sleep with peace. May he wake refreshed, remembering that he is loved, held, and never alone. May the one who watches over Israel and never sleeps be the one who watches over him.
