This prayer is for the moments when you are worried, when your thoughts run ahead to what might go wrong and your chest feels tight before the day has even begun. You can pray it in the morning before the day gets loud, late at night when sleep will not come, or in the middle of a hard hour when you need to hand something over quickly. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own worries in the same spirit.

Prayer When You Are Worried

Lord, you know what is weighing on me right now. I keep turning over the what-ifs: the test results I have not heard yet, the bills that do not quite add up, the conversation I am dreading with my child, the job that feels one bad meeting away from disaster. My mind keeps running in circles, and my body feels it too, with the tight shoulders and the shallow breathing that will not settle.

I am bringing all of it to you instead of carrying it alone. I do not have to pretend I am fine. Help me to name each worry honestly, and then to set it down in your hands one at a time. Where I can take a step, show me the step. Where I cannot change the outcome, give me the courage to trust that you are already present in it. Quiet the noise in my head and remind me that you have not lost track of me or my people.

Steady my heart and let your peace guard what I cannot guard on my own. I ask this in the name of Jesus, who invited the weary to come to him. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, my thoughts are racing and I feel the worry closing in. I give you this fear right now, and I give you the next hour too. Breathe into my lungs and slow my mind. Show me one faithful thing to do next, and let the rest rest with you. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul names anxiety directly and then points to prayer with thanksgiving as the way to bring it to God. Pray these words by turning each worry into a specific request, and ask for the peace he describes to guard your heart and thoughts.

1 Peter 5:7

Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

(WEB)

Peter’s instruction is simple: cast your cares onto God. When you pray this verse, picture physically setting each worry down, one by one, and then say aloud that you are leaving it with the One who cares for you.

Psalm 55:22

Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved.

(WEB)

This verse offers a picture of handing over a burden that is too heavy to hold. Pray it by naming the burden you carry and asking God to sustain you, trusting that he is strong enough to hold what you cannot.

Matthew 6:34

Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient.

(WEB)

Jesus speaks to the habit of borrowing tomorrow’s trouble. Pray this verse by asking God to help you keep today’s concerns in today’s hands, and to give you the strength for the present moment only.

Psalm 94:19

In the multitude of my thoughts within me, your comforts delight my soul.

(WEB)

The psalmist describes God’s comfort arriving in the midst of many anxious thoughts. Pray it slowly, letting each word be an invitation to God to bring consolation to the crowded places in your mind.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when the worry is strongest and a place where you can be still for a few minutes, such as the edge of your bed, a parked car before you go inside, or a quiet corner of the kitchen. Hold something in your hands while you pray, like a mug, a pen, or a smooth stone, so your body has something to do while your mind slows. If you can, write down the worries you name and place the paper somewhere you will see it later as a reminder of what you gave away.

You can also pray this prayer with someone you trust. Ask a friend, a spouse, or a pastor to read it aloud over you while you listen, or take turns reading the lines. Sharing a worry with another believer often makes it feel lighter, and it reminds you that you are part of a community that bears burdens together.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who holds every worry in his hands steady your heart today. May his peace settle over your thoughts like a quiet shelter, and may he give you just enough strength for the next step. Rest in his care, knowing you are seen and not forgotten.
