When worry settles over you and your thoughts will not slow down, this prayer gives you words to bring to God right away. Pray it in the morning before the day begins, late at night when sleep will not come, or in the middle of a hard moment when you need to steady yourself. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayers When You Are Worried

Lord, my mind keeps running ahead of me. I lie awake thinking about money that may not stretch to the end of the month, about the phone call I have been dreading, about the test results, the job, the child who has not texted back, and the what-ifs that multiply when no one else is awake. I do not know how any of it will turn out, and that not-knowing is heavy. I am tired of carrying it alone and tired of rehearsing disasters that may never come.

So I bring each worry to you one at a time. Take the money concern and hold it. Take the conversation I fear and go into it with me. Take the people I love and keep them in your care when I cannot. Quiet the noise in my chest and help me notice the ground under my feet right now, this breath, this room, this hour. Remind me that you have carried generations through things far worse than what I face today. Help me trust you with tomorrow instead of trying to control it. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am anxious right now and I need you. Slow my breathing and steady my heart. Show me the one next step I can take, and leave the rest with you. I do not have to solve everything today. Thank you that you see what I cannot see and that you are with me in this moment. Help me rest in that. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul names worry directly and then points to a practice: bring each request to God with thanksgiving. Pray this slowly when your thoughts are racing, naming the specific fear and then giving thanks for one thing God has already done.

1 Peter 5:7

Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

(WEB)

This verse gives a simple action: cast the worry onto God. Try picturing yourself lifting the concern and setting it down in his hands, then repeating the image whenever it returns.

Psalm 55:22

Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved.

(WEB)

The psalmist invites you to hand over your burden and trusts that God will sustain you. Pray this when a weight feels too heavy for one person to lift, letting it be a reminder that you do not carry it alone.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

God speaks directly to fear here and promises his presence and strength. Read it aloud when you feel alone in a hard situation, and let the promise of his nearness meet the fear in your body.

Matthew 6:34

Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient.

(WEB)

Jesus addresses worry about tomorrow and tells you each day has enough trouble of its own. Use this verse to pull your attention back to today, asking God for what you need only for this one day.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when worry tends to rise, such as the first few minutes after you wake or the quiet before you sleep, and keep this prayer somewhere you will see it. You might write it on a card, save it in your phone, or say it while you wash dishes or walk to the car. Something to do with your hands, like holding a warm mug or pressing your palms together, can help your body settle while your mind prays.

If worry has become something you cannot shake, ask a friend, pastor, or family member to pray this with you or for you. Hearing someone else speak your fears to God can loosen their grip. And if anxiety keeps returning and affects your sleep, appetite, or daily life, consider talking with a doctor or counselor alongside your prayers. Caring for your mind is one more way of trusting God with your whole self.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord hold you steady when your thoughts run ahead of you. May his peace guard your heart and your mind through this day and the night that follows. May you feel his nearness in the quiet places, and may you rest in the knowledge that you are deeply loved.
