This list gives you Bible verses about respect, arranged by the moments when honoring someone is hardest: at home, at work, in conflict, and before God. It is for anyone who wants Scripture to shape how they treat parents, coworkers, neighbors and strangers. The verses here share one thread: respect is rooted in the worth God gives every person, and it shows up in ordinary words and choices.

Verses for Honoring Parents and Family

Family is where most of us first learn to show respect, and where it is tested daily. The verses in this group speak to children, adult children and anyone caring for aging relatives. Read them when a tense conversation at the dinner table is about to start.

Exodus 20:12

“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which the LORD your God gives you.

(WEB)

This commandment is one of the few with a promise attached. Try naming one specific thing your parents did for you this week and thanking them for it out loud, even if the relationship is complicated.

Ephesians 6:1-3

1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with a promise: 3 “that it may be well with you, and you may live long on the earth.”

(WEB)

Paul ties obedience and honor to the Lord’s own order. When you feel resistance rising, pause and ask what respectful response would still be true to your convictions.

Proverbs 23:22

Listen to your father who gave you life, and don’t despise your mother when she is old.

(WEB)

This verse asks you to listen to the one who raised you, especially when they are older and their world is shrinking. Pick one older relative and ask them a question about their life they have not been asked in a while.

Leviticus 19:3

“‘Each one of you shall respect his mother and his father. You shall keep my Sabbaths. I am the LORD your God.

(WEB)

Respect for parents appears here alongside reverence for God, showing that the two are linked. Consider one practical act this week that honors a parent, such as calling without being asked or helping with a chore.

Verses for Respecting Others at Work and in Public

Respect is not reserved for people we love. These verses address how we speak to bosses, coworkers, service workers and people we disagree with. They are useful before a hard meeting or after a sharp email comes in.

Romans 13:7

Therefore give everyone what you owe: if you owe taxes, pay taxes; if customs, then customs; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

(WEB)

Paul lists respect and honor as debts we owe to others in public life. Before your next meeting, decide ahead of time how you will address the people in the room, by name and with courtesy.

1 Peter 2:17

Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.

(WEB)

Peter calls believers to honor everyone, not only those who have earned it. Next time you are tempted to dismiss a cashier or a junior colleague, make eye contact and say thank you sincerely.

Colossians 4:6

Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.

(WEB)

Respect often lives in tone and seasoning, not only in content. Before replying to a frustrating message, reread it once and choose words you would be willing to say to the person’s face.

Philippians 2:3

Doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself…

(WEB)

This verse asks you to count others as more important than yourself in humility. In your next group discussion, let someone else finish their point before you respond.

Verses for Respecting People Who Differ From You

Some of the hardest moments for respect come when someone’s views, background or choices are very different from ours. These verses give a steady footing for disagreement without contempt. They work well as a reminder before you post online or speak in a heated argument.

1 Peter 3:15

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts; and always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, with humility and fear…

(WEB)

Peter pairs honest explanation of your faith with gentleness and respect. Before you answer a hard question, ask God to slow your tongue and steady your tone.

James 1:19

So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger…

(WEB)

Quick listening and slow speaking are a form of respect, because they signal that the other person’s words matter. In your next disagreement, summarize what the other person said before you offer your own view.

Galatians 3:28

There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul insists that in Christ, distinctions of status and background do not cancel anyone’s standing before God. Consider one person you tend to overlook because of their background and intentionally learn their name and story.

Matthew 7:12

Therefore whatever you desire for men to do to you, you shall also do to them; for this is the law and the prophets.

(WEB)

Often called the Golden Rule, this verse asks you to treat others as you would want to be treated. Before reacting to someone who has annoyed you, imagine how you would want to be spoken to in their position.

Verses for Honoring Everyone Made in God’s Image

Respect at its root rests on the fact that every person bears God’s image. These verses ground dignity in who God is and who He made us to be. Use them when you are tempted to see someone as less valuable than you.

Genesis 1:27

God created man in his own image. In God’s image he created him; male and female he created them.

(WEB)

This verse says all people are made in God’s image, which is the foundation for treating anyone with dignity. Look at one person today you might ordinarily ignore and remind yourself that they were made by the same Creator.

Psalm 8:4-5

4 What is man, that you think of him? What is the son of man, that you care for him? 5 For you have made him a little lower than the angels, and crowned him with glory and honor.

(WEB)

The psalmist marvels that God cares for humans and crowns them with honor. Let this truth shape how you speak about yourself as well as others, since respect for others begins with seeing their worth.

Romans 12:10

In love of the brothers be tenderly affectionate to one another; in honor preferring one another…

(WEB)

Paul asks believers to outdo one another in showing honor. Look for one small way to lift up someone in your church or family this week, perhaps by praising their work to someone else.

How to Use These Verses

Write one or two of these verses on a card and place it where you will see it during your routine, such as by the coffee maker, on your car dashboard or on your phone’s lock screen. Choose a verse that matches the relationship you are working on most right now, and let it guide one specific action that day.

Read a verse aloud before a difficult conversation, then pray briefly for the person you will speak with. Afterward, take a minute to notice where you were respectful and where you fell short, and bring both honestly to God. Over time, these small rhythms form a habit of honor.

A Short Prayer for Respect

Lord, you made every person in your image, and you have shown me honor I did not earn. Teach me to see the people in my life the way you see them. Guard my tongue when I am tired or angry, and give me gentle words for the people who frustrate me most. Help me honor my parents, my coworkers, and strangers who cross my path today. Where I have been disrespectful, forgive me and help me make things right. Amen.
