Luke 1:43 records Elizabeth’s astonished question when Mary, pregnant with Jesus, comes to visit her. Elizabeth is amazed that the mother of the Lord would come to her, and she sees this as a remarkable kindness. The words are spoken by Elizabeth, the older cousin of Mary, as she greets her in the hill country of Judea.

Why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

What Luke 1:43 Means

Elizabeth opens with a question rather than a statement. The word “favored” points to a gift given freely, not something earned. She is struck that someone carrying the Lord’s child would choose to visit her home, and she names Mary as “the mother of my Lord” before anyone else has said so. Her wonder is directed toward the honor God has placed on Mary’s life and on this meeting.

The verse does not explain how Elizabeth knows Mary’s child is the Lord. That understanding comes in the surrounding verses, where Elizabeth is filled with the Holy Spirit and the baby leaps in her womb. The verse itself captures the moment of recognition and humility. It does not promise any particular blessing to the reader, but it shows how a faithful person responds when God’s work arrives at her door.

The Context of Luke 1:43

Luke is the author of this Gospel, traditionally identified as a physician and companion of Paul, writing to an audience he addresses as Theophilus. He writes with careful attention to the birth stories of John the Baptist and Jesus, showing how God’s promises were unfolding through ordinary households in Judea. The Gospel as a whole stresses God’s care for the humble, the poor, and the overlooked.

The verses just before this one describe Mary leaving Nazareth and arriving at the home of Zechariah and Elizabeth. Verse 41 tells how the baby leaps and Elizabeth is filled with the Holy Spirit. Verses 44 to 46 continue her words and move into Mary’s song of praise. Read in this setting, verse 43 is the hinge where Elizabeth’s joy turns into open recognition of God’s purpose for both women.

Key Phrases in Luke 1:43

Luke 1:45

Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of the things which have been spoken to her from the Lord!”

This verse continues Elizabeth’s words and blesses Mary for her believing trust in what the Lord has spoken. It shows that the faith Elizabeth praises in Mary is the same faith that makes such a visit meaningful, and it deepens the sense of God’s faithfulness across both women’s lives.

Luke 1:46

Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord.

(WEB)

Here Mary answers Elizabeth with a song of praise that magnifies the Lord. Reading it beside verse 43 shows how the two women respond to God’s work with worship, turning their surprise and joy outward toward the One who has acted on their behalf.

A Short Prayer From Luke 1:43

Lord, I confess that I often struggle to believe that You would visit me with Your kindness. Help me to receive the gifts You send through others with a humble and grateful heart. When people come near to encourage or help me, open my eyes to see You at work in their presence. Teach me to honor the people You place in my life, and give me the trust to rest in Your favor each day. Amen.
