First Peter 3:11 calls believers to two actions that work together: step away from what is wrong, and actively do what is good. It also asks them to look for peace and go after it, rather than waiting for it to arrive on its own. The words come from the apostle Peter, writing to Christians scattered across what is now Asia Minor, who were facing social pressure and hostility for their faith.

Let him turn away from evil, and do good. Let him seek peace, and pursue it.

What 1 Peter 3:11 Means

The verse has four verbs, and each one matters. “Turn away” means deliberately withdrawing from evil, the way you would step back from a hot stove. “Do good” is the positive side of that choice, because avoiding wrong is not enough on its own. “Seek peace” describes searching for harmony as a goal you chase, not just a feeling you hope for. “Pursue it” adds urgency, the image of running after something that keeps moving ahead of you.

The verse is a command, but it is not a guarantee. Peter is not promising that peaceful relationships will always follow from good behavior, since people sometimes refuse peace no matter how much you offer it. What the verse does promise is that the believer’s part is clear: choose good, and keep working toward peace even when the outcome is out of your hands.

The Context of 1 Peter 3:11

First Peter was written to Christians who were being slandered and mistreated, many of them living as a minority in communities that did not share their faith. The letter repeatedly urges them to hold steady and respond to hostility with a different kind of conduct. Peter’s readers would have been tempted to answer insult with insult, which is exactly what verse 9 warns against.

Verse 11 sits inside a longer passage, verses 8 through 14, that begins with a call to unity and tenderheartedness and ends with a promise of blessing for those who suffer for doing right. Read in that setting, the command to turn from evil and pursue peace is not a vague moral slogan. It is a specific way of living through conflict, quoted by Peter from Psalm 34, and it prepares the reader for the reassurance that follows about the Lord’s watchful care.

Key Phrases in 1 Peter 3:11

Psalm 34:14

This verse is the Old Testament source Peter draws on in the same passage. Reading it alongside 1 Peter 3:11 shows that the call to turn from evil and seek peace has deep roots in the way God’s people have always been asked to live.

Romans 12:18

If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men.

Paul gives a similar instruction to the Roman church, acknowledging that peace is not always fully within your control. Together with 1 Peter 3:11, it reminds you to do your part faithfully and leave the rest to God.

A Short Prayer From 1 Peter 3:11

Lord, you know how quickly I can reach for a sharp word or a cold silence when someone has hurt me. Help me turn away from that habit and choose what is good instead. Give me courage to seek peace even when it costs me something, and patience to keep pursuing it when the first effort does not work. Let my words and actions point others toward you. Amen.
