1 Corinthians 6:15 teaches that Christians are not just spiritual people with bodies that do not matter. Through faith, the believer’s physical body has become part of Christ’s body, so what a Christian does with the body matters to the Lord. The apostle Paul wrote this to the church in Corinth, a busy port city where sexual immorality was common and where some believers had begun to think that what they did physically had no bearing on their relationship with God.

Don’t you know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them members of a prostitute? May it never be!

What 1 Corinthians 6:15 Means

Paul opens with a question that assumes an answer: “Don’t you know?” He is reminding his readers of something they were already taught. Believers are united with Christ in a real way, so their bodies are described as members of Him, much as a hand or foot is a member of a person. The union is not symbolic only. It shapes everyday life, including how a person uses their hands, eyes, and desires.

The second part of the verse is a rhetorical question that Paul finds absurd. If your body belongs to Christ, how could you give that same body over to a prostitute and join it to her? The phrase “May it never be!” is his strong way of saying the idea is unthinkable. The verse does not promise that every believer will live perfectly, and it does not say that a past failure cancels God’s grace. It does say that the body is not a private zone where the rules of Christ no longer apply.

The Context of 1 Corinthians 6:15

First Corinthians was written by Paul, probably in the mid-50s AD, to a congregation he had founded and to which he was writing to address a long list of problems, including division, lawsuits among believers, and confusion about sex and marriage. The Corinthian slogan “All things are lawful for me” appears in verse 12, and it seems some believers were using their new freedom in Christ as a license to do whatever they wanted physically. Paul corrects that slogan directly.

Just before verse 15, Paul says the body is “for the Lord; and the Lord for the body,” and that God raised the Lord and will raise believers by His power. Verse 15 grows out of that thought. Because the body will be raised and belongs to Christ, its present use carries eternal weight. Verses 16 to 18 then explain that sexual union creates a real bond, which is why Paul calls believers to flee sexual immorality. Read in this setting, verse 15 is an argument from the resurrection and from union with Christ, not a standalone rule.

Key Phrases in 1 Corinthians 6:15

1 Corinthians 6:19-20

19 Or don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

These verses continue Paul’s argument by saying the body is a temple of the Holy Spirit and that believers were bought at a price. This adds the idea of ownership and purchase to the union with Christ in verse 15, showing that the body is cared for because it has been redeemed.

Romans 12:1

Therefore I urge you, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service.

Paul urges believers to offer their bodies as a living sacrifice to God. This connects with 1 Corinthians 6:15 by showing the positive side of the same truth: the body that belongs to Christ is meant to be given to Him in worship and daily obedience.

A Short Prayer From 1 Corinthians 6:15

Lord Jesus, thank You that my body is joined to You and is part of Your body, the church. I confess the times I have treated my body as if it were mine alone and as if my choices had no connection to You. Forgive me, and cleanse me by Your grace. Help me to see my eyes, hands, and desires as belonging to You, and give me strength to refuse what would bring Your members into sin. Let my body honor You in every place I go. Amen.
