This list gives you King James Version verses for the moments when discouragement settles in, whether it comes from failure, grief, long waiting or a sense that nothing you do is enough. Each entry names the situation it speaks to and suggests one simple way to carry the verse through your day. The verses share a common thread: God sees the weary person, stays near them, and gives strength that does not depend on how they feel.

Verses for the Heaviness of Long Waiting

Some discouragement comes not from a single blow but from months of unanswered prayer and unchanged circumstances. These verses speak to the person who is tired of waiting and wonders whether hope is still worth holding.

Psalm 42:11

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

(KJV)

The psalmist talks to his own soul as if it were a separate person who needs correcting. Try naming your discouragement out loud in the morning, then answering it with a sentence of hope, so the verse becomes a habit of speaking truth to yourself.

Isaiah 40:31

But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

(KJV)

Isaiah describes strength that comes from waiting on the Lord, not from never growing tired. When your energy runs low, pause at midday and simply ask God for the next step, rather than trying to see the whole road at once.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

(KJV)

These verses come from a book of grief, yet they turn toward mercy that renews every morning. Read them when you wake and before you check your phone, letting the first thought of the day be God’s faithfulness rather than yesterday’s disappointments.

Romans 8:18

For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

(KJV)

Paul does not dismiss present suffering; he sets it beside a future he is confident of. Write the word “present” on a card and the word “glory” beneath it, and keep it where you will see it when the current trouble feels like the whole story.

Verses for Moments of Failure and Self-Doubt

Discouragement often tells us we have disqualified ourselves, that we have failed beyond repair or are too weak to continue. The verses in this section answer that voice with the character of a God who restores, forgives and strengthens.

Micah 7:8

Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light unto me.

(KJV)

Micah speaks as someone who has fallen and expects to rise again because the Lord is his light. When a mistake replays in your mind, name it to God in one sentence, then get up and do the next small task that is in front of you.

2 Corinthians 12:9

And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

(KJV)

Paul had to learn that his weakness was the place where Christ’s power could work most clearly. Notice one area where you feel least capable today and bring it to God as the place you need grace, not as proof you are beyond help.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

(KJV)

The Lord draws near to people whose hearts are broken and whose spirits feel crushed. If you feel alone with your failure, speak aloud, “You are near to me,” and let that sentence slow your breathing before you return to your work.

Philippians 1:6

Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ…

(KJV)

Paul is confident that the good work God began will be finished, which means your story is not closed because today went poorly. Finish this sentence in your journal: “God is still working in me because…” and fill it with a specific reason.

Verses for Days When Fear and Anxiety Press In

Discouragement and fear often travel together, leaving us worried about tomorrow and unable to rest tonight. These verses point to God’s presence and steadiness when the mind races ahead of what is actually happening.

Joshua 1:9

Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

(KJV)

God gives this command to Joshua just before a frightening task, grounding courage in His presence rather than in Joshua’s own confidence. Before a hard conversation or appointment, read the verse once slowly and remind yourself that you do not go in alone.

Psalm 56:3

What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.

(KJV)

David is honest that he is afraid, and he chooses to trust in the same breath. When fear rises, say the first half of the verse as your own words, then pause before the next decision and let trust take the lead.

Matthew 11:28

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

(KJV)

Jesus invites the weary and heavy laden to come to Him, not after they have cleaned themselves up. Tonight, before sleep, set down one specific burden in prayer and leave it there, even if you pick it up again tomorrow.

John 14:27

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

(KJV)

Jesus gives a peace that is different from what the world offers, and He does not say it will remove every trouble. When your heart is troubled, breathe slowly and tell God what is worrying you, trusting that His peace can settle you even while the situation remains.

Verses for Renewing Hope and Looking Ahead

When discouragement has lasted a long time, it can make the future look closed. These final verses turn your eyes toward what God has promised and toward the faithfulness that carries His people forward.

Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

(KJV)

Moses speaks these words to a people about to face hard ground, reminding them that the Lord goes before them. Write this verse on the inside of a notebook you use for daily planning, so the promise appears where your work begins.

Psalm 27:13

I had fainted , unless I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.

(KJV)

David, in the middle of danger, declares that he would have fainted unless he believed he would see God’s goodness. Name one good thing you still expect to see this season, however small, and watch for it this week.

Romans 15:13

Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.

(KJV)

Paul prays that God would fill believers with joy and peace so that they overflow with hope. Use this verse as a closing prayer each evening, asking the Lord to restore hope in the places where discouragement has taken root.

How to Use These Verses

Choose two or three verses from this list that match what you are feeling most strongly right now, and write them on a card or in a note on your phone. Keep the card where you naturally pause, such as beside the coffee maker, on the dashboard or on your bathroom mirror, so that you meet God’s word in the middle of ordinary routines.

Read the verses aloud rather than only silently, since saying them can help them settle into your mind when your thoughts are scattered. If a verse feels hard to believe, pray it as a request, telling God, “Help my unbelief with this promise,” and return to it the next day. Repetition over weeks often does more than a single strong reading.

A Short Prayer for Discouragement

Lord, You know the weight I am carrying today, and You see the places where I feel tired, ashamed or afraid. I bring You the discouragement I cannot fix on my own and ask You to meet me where I am. Remind me of Your faithfulness, steady my thoughts when they race ahead, and give me strength for the next small step. Help me rest in Your presence and trust that You are still at work in me. Amen.
