This short prayer before a job interview is written for the hour or two before you walk into a room where someone will weigh your answers and decide whether to hire you. Pray it in the car, in a parking lot, on a bench outside the building, or at your kitchen table the morning of the interview. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Short Prayer Before a Job Interview

Lord, you already know the nerves in my stomach and the questions I keep rehearsing in my head. Thank you that I don’t have to walk into this room carrying all of it alone. Settle my thoughts so I can listen well, remember what I have actually done, and speak about it honestly. Let me not be ruled by fear of saying the wrong thing or by the need to impress.

Help me to be truthful about my strengths and my limits, and to ask good questions when the time comes. If I am the right person for this role, open the door and let it be clear. If I am not, give me grace to accept it and trust that you have something ahead. Whatever happens in the next hour, let me leave with my dignity intact, my integrity unbroken, and a heart still at peace with you. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am anxious and I need you right now. Calm my mind, steady my voice, and help me to listen carefully to each question. Let me be honest, kind and clear. Whatever the outcome, I trust you with it. Thank you for being with me in this room. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Philippians 4:6

In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.

(WEB)

Paul names the exact feeling most people bring into an interview, worry about the outcome. Pray this verse by bringing the specific things you are anxious about to God by name, then giving thanks for what he has already done in your life.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Before an interview you can feel that everything depends on your own cleverness. Pray this passage by admitting that you cannot control the panel, the other candidates or the hiring timeline, and asking God to make your path straight.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

You will be asked questions you did not anticipate. Pray this verse by asking God for wisdom in the exact moments you will need to think on your feet, trusting that he is generous to those who ask.

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

Whatever the result, your work and your character are offered to God first. Pray this verse by asking that you would speak and answer as someone serving the Lord, not only seeking approval from the people across the table.

Psalm 121:1-2

1 I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

(WEB)

When you feel small in a large building, look up in your mind to the one who made heaven and earth. Pray this psalm as you walk toward the entrance, reminding yourself where your help comes from.

How to Pray This Prayer

Give yourself ten minutes before you leave the house or the car. Sit somewhere quiet, take three slow breaths, and read the prayer once silently and once aloud. If your hands are shaking, hold a pen, a folded copy of your résumé, or simply press your palms together while you pray. Physical stillness often helps the mind follow.

If someone you trust knows you are interviewing, ask them to pray for you the same morning, or pray this prayer together by phone. Many people find that hearing another voice ask God for steadiness takes some of the pressure off. You are not required to feel calm before you begin; you can simply bring the nervousness to God as it is.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into that room and stand with you in every question. May he give you clear thoughts, a steady voice and a peaceful heart. Whatever the outcome, may you walk out knowing you were seen, valued and held by the God who never leaves you.
