When life is hard, prayer can feel like one more thing you cannot manage. The prayers on this page are written for those seasons: a diagnosis you did not expect, a marriage under strain, a job that has gone quiet, grief that comes back in waves. Pray the longer prayer when you have time to sit with God, or use the shorter one when you only have a breath between tasks. You can read either aloud exactly as written, or let it be a starting point and speak your own words in the spaces it leaves open.
Prayers When Life Is Hard
Lord, you see what I am carrying today, and you know the parts of it I cannot name yet. I am tired in a way sleep does not fix. My thoughts run ahead to what might happen, and my heart keeps replaying what has already happened. Some nights I lie awake doing the math on bills, or on relationships, or on the health of people I love, and I wake up with the same weight on my chest. Hold me in this. Steady my breathing and quiet the noise in my head so I can hear you.
I do not ask you to explain everything to me right now. I ask you to be near. Show me the next small step instead of the whole mountain, and give me the strength to take it. Where I have been unkind to myself, out of fear or shame, soften my heart toward myself the way you soften toward me. Bring the right people close, and let me receive their help without apologizing for needing it. Keep me from pretending I am fine when I am not.
Above all, remind me that you have not stepped away from this situation or from me. Stay with me through the hours I cannot get through on my own strength. Let my weakness be the place where your steadiness shows up. I trust you with what I cannot control, and I give you the parts I have been trying to hold alone. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am struggling right now. Be near me in this moment, steady my breath and my thoughts, and help me take the next step, however small. I release what I cannot fix into your hands, and I ask for enough strength for the next hour, not the whole week. Thank you that I do not face this alone. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 34:18
The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.
(WEB)
Pray this when your heart feels crushed and you are not sure you can go on. Ask God to draw near in the specific place where it hurts, and trust that nearness is what he offers the brokenhearted.
Psalm 46:1
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
(WEB)
Use this verse when everything around you feels unstable. Name the trouble you are facing and then name God as your refuge, letting the shelter of his presence sit alongside the difficulty rather than wait for it to disappear.
Isaiah 41:10
Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.
(WEB)
Pray this when fear is loud. Speak the promise back to God, asking him to strengthen you for the particular fear you are facing today, and rest in his stated presence rather than your own reassurance.
Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
(WEB)
Bring this verse to God when you are worn out from carrying too much. Name the burdens one by one, and ask Jesus to take them, admitting honestly that you need rest and do not have to earn it.
Romans 8:28
We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.
(WEB)
Pray this when you cannot see how anything good could come from your situation. Ask God to work in ways you cannot yet perceive, and surrender your need to understand the whole story in exchange for trust in his character.
How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a time that is least crowded, often early in the morning before the day pulls at you or late at night when the house is quiet. Sit somewhere you can be still, perhaps a chair by a window or the edge of your bed. Holding something in your hands can help: a cup of tea, a smooth stone, or a piece of paper where you have written the names of the people and situations you are bringing before God. Read the prayer slowly, pausing after each paragraph to let the words settle.
You do not have to pray this alone. Ask a trusted friend, a pastor, a small group, or a family member to pray it with you or to pray it over you in their own words. Some people find it helpful to read it aloud in a room with someone who loves them. If the words feel too heavy on a given day, simply sit in silence with the first line and let that be enough.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord hold you steady through this season, and may you feel the nearness of his presence in the ordinary moments of your day. May his peace guard your heart and mind when fear rises, and may you find rest for your soul even in the middle of the storm. You are not forgotten, and you are not without help.
