This prayer is for the ache that comes when someone you love is far away, has died, or is simply no longer part of your daily life. You can pray it when the empty chair catches your eye, when a song or a smell brings a memory back, or late at night when the house is quiet. Read it aloud as written, or let it be a starting point and speak your own words after it.

Prayer When You Miss Someone

Lord, you see the space in my life where this person used to be. I miss them more than I expected, and some days the missing comes over me in waves I did not see coming. You know their voice, their laugh, the particular way they said my name. Please hold those memories for me and keep them safe. When I reach for the phone to call them, or turn to tell them something, let me feel your nearness in that moment.

I bring you my loneliness and my questions too. Why does love leave such a hollow place? I do not always understand the timing, the distance, or the goodbyes that were never said. Help me to be honest with you about what I feel, without pretending I am fine and without sinking into despair. Give me patience with my own grief and kindness toward the days when I cannot seem to get through the morning.

Thank you for the gift of knowing this person at all. Thank you for what they taught me, the ways they shaped me, and the love we shared. Let that gratitude sit beside my sadness, so that the missing does not swallow up the good that was given. Keep them in your care wherever they are, and keep me in yours as I learn to live with the absence. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I miss them today, and it hurts. You know exactly how much I loved them and how much I still do. Be close to me in this quiet moment, and help me carry the memory without being crushed by it. Remind me that you have not lost track of them, and that you are with me now. Give me enough peace to take the next breath, and the one after that. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this when grief feels heavy and you wonder whether God notices. Ask him to draw near to your broken places, and thank him that your sorrow is not hidden from him.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

Bring the wounds left by a lost relationship to God, trusting him as the one who heals. Name specific hurts you feel and ask him to bind them up, one at a time.

John 14:27

Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.

(WEB)

Jesus spoke these words to his friends before he left them. Pray them over your own heart, asking for a peace that does not depend on having the person near you.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; 4 who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

(WEB)

Paul describes God as the source of every comfort. Thank God for the comfort you have already received, and ask him to let you offer that same comfort to someone else one day.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-14

13 But we don’t want you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning those who have fallen asleep, so that you don’t grieve like the rest, who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul wrote this to people grieving their dead, reminding them that their hope rests in Jesus. Pray that your grief would be shaped by that hope, not by despair.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helps to pray this prayer at a set time, such as during the drive home, while making the morning coffee, or before bed. Choose a place that feels like yours, and if you can, keep something in your hands while you pray, like a photograph, a ring, or a worn sweater that belonged to them. Let the object be a prompt to speak honestly rather than a reason to hurry through the words.

You can also pray this with a trusted friend, a pastor, or a family member who knew the person you miss. Ask them to read it aloud while you listen, or take turns adding a line each. Sharing the prayer with someone who also misses them can turn a lonely ache into a shared remembrance and remind you that you are not carrying it by yourself.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who knows every tear keep your heart steady in the days of missing. May he bring you memories that warm rather than wound, and may his peace guard you when the absence feels loudest. May you be held today by the one who never leaves, and may hope quietly grow in the place where love still lives.
