This prayer is for the moments when your reserves are empty and the day still asks more of you than you have to give. Pray it when you wake to a long list you cannot face, when you sit in a waiting room, or when you lie awake running the same worries again. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words into the spaces.

Prayer When You Need Strength

Lord, I am tired, and I will not pretend otherwise. I am tired in my body from the nights I have not slept well and the work that keeps piling up. I am tired in my heart from carrying worries about the people I love, about money, about whether I am doing any of this well. I do not have enough in me to get through today on my own, and I am not ashamed to say so to you.

So I ask you to give me the strength I lack. Steady my hands for the tasks in front of me, and give me clear thoughts for the decisions I must make. When my patience runs short with the people closest to me, soften my words and quiet my irritation. When fear rises in the middle of the night, remind me that you are awake and that you have not stopped watching over me. Help me take the next small step rather than staring at the whole mountain.

Thank you that my strength does not have to come from my own supply. Teach me to rest in you the way a child rests against a parent after a long walk. I give you this day, the hours I can see and the ones I cannot. Carry what I cannot, and let me be carried. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am running on empty. Give me what I need for the next hour, and then the hour after that. Steady my breathing, slow my racing mind, and put courage in the place where fear is sitting. I trust you with what comes next, even when I cannot see it. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by naming your own weariness and asking God to do what he promises here. It is a reminder that strength is given to the faint, not earned by the strong.

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

When everything feels unsteady, pray this verse slowly and let the word refuge settle in. Ask God to be the place you run to rather than the place you think you must reach after you have solved everything yourself.

2 Corinthians 12:9

He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

(WEB)

Use this verse when your weakness feels like failure. Ask God to show you where his grace is already sufficient, even in the places where you feel least capable.

Philippians 4:13

I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as an honest request rather than a slogan. Ask God to give you the strength for the specific task ahead, trusting that he is the one who supplies it.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel you are carrying too much. Bring your burdens to Jesus by name, one at a time, and ask him to give you the rest he offers.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a moment when you can be still for a few minutes, such as before you get out of bed, in your car before walking into work, or at the kitchen table after the house has quieted. Read the prayer slowly, pausing after each paragraph to notice what is true in your life right now. If your hands need something to do, hold a cup of tea, a Bible, or a smooth stone while you speak, so your body has a place to rest along with your mind.

You do not have to pray this alone. Ask a close friend, your spouse, or someone from your church to pray it with you or over you, especially on the days when you cannot find the words yourself. Let them read the prayer aloud while you listen, and receive their strength as well as offering your own.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord be your strength when your own runs dry. May he steady you for each hour, quiet the fear that keeps you awake, and remind you that you are held. May you find rest in him today, and may the next small step be enough.
