This prayer is for couples in the first days, months or years of marriage, when the vows are fresh and the shared life is still being learned. Pray it on the wedding day, on an anniversary, or on any ordinary morning when you want to ask God to bless the home you are building together. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Blessings for a New Marriage

Father, thank you for bringing us together and for making marriage a picture of your faithful love. We come to you as two people who are still learning each other, and we ask you to guard the promises we made. Where we are tired, make us patient. Where we disagree, give us gentle words and a willingness to listen before we speak. Teach us to forgive quickly and to ask forgiveness without pride.

Lord, bless the everyday things that will shape our years: how we spend our money, how we spend our evenings, how we welcome guests and how we care for one another when life goes wrong. Give us wisdom for the decisions ahead, including the ones about work, family, health and home. Keep us close to you, so that our marriage is never built on our own strength alone. Let our home be a place of peace where your name is honored. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, we are glad to be married to each other, and we ask for your blessing on us today. Keep our hearts soft toward one another, and help us to speak kindly when we are weary. Give us patience, humility and the grace to forgive. Be the center of our home, and let your love be seen in the way we treat each other. Amen.

Pray this verse as a thanksgiving for the union God designed from the beginning. Ask him to help you leave old patterns of dependence on parents or past habits, and to cleave to your spouse with loyalty and tenderness.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. 10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.

Use this passage to ask God for a partnership where each of you helps the other when one falls or struggles. Thank him for the companionship he has given, and ask for hands ready to lift and hearts ready to encourage.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

4 Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, 5 doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil; 6 doesn’t rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Read this slowly as a prayer for daily love. Name each quality aloud, asking God to shape your speech and attitudes in your marriage, and confess the places where you fall short so that his grace can work there.

Colossians 3:13-14

13 Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do. 14 Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection.

Pray this when a hurt is still fresh. Ask God to help you bear with your spouse, to release grievances, and to clothe yourselves in love, which holds everything else together in harmony.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

Bring your decisions as a couple before the Lord with this verse. Ask him to direct your plans, your finances and your next steps, trusting that he sees what you cannot yet see.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when you are both awake and unhurried, such as a quiet morning over coffee or a few minutes before bed. Sit side by side or hold hands, and read the prayer slowly, pausing after each paragraph so that each of you can add a sentence of your own. Keeping a hand on your spouse’s arm or shoulder can help the words feel shared rather than recited.

You might also invite a trusted friend, mentor or pastor to pray this prayer over you as a couple. Many newly married people find it helpful to pray it again each year on their anniversary, noticing how God has answered and where he is still at work.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless this marriage and keep it in his care. May he make your love steady, your home warm and your hearts generous toward one another. May the years ahead be full of his faithfulness, and may you grow together into the people he has made you to be.
