Short prayers for Palm Sunday help you welcome Jesus into Jerusalem in your own heart, whether you are at church with palm branches in your hands or at home with no service to attend. Pray them at the start of Holy Week, on the morning of the Sunday before Easter, or any time you want to honor the day when the crowds cried “Hosanna.” You can read the prayer below aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Short Prayers for Palm Sunday

Lord Jesus, you rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, humble and not on a warhorse, and the crowds spread their cloaks and branches before you. Today I come with my own mixed heart. Some days I shout your praise with real joy, and other days I am quiet because I am tired, worried, or unsure what I believe. Meet me in both places. Teach me to welcome you as King without needing to understand everything about how you will rule.

I also bring you the people I am thinking about this week: the sick, the grieving, the ones carrying burdens no one else sees, and the ones who feel far from you. I bring you my own fears about what this week will hold. Help me remember that the same Jesus who entered the city in peace is the one who walks with me through every hard day ahead. Give me a steady willingness to follow you, even when the road leads toward the cross. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Jesus, King who comes in humility, I lay down my palm branch of praise and my worries together before you. Be the one I follow this week, through every celebration and every sorrow. Help me see you clearly in the crowd and trust you with what I cannot see. Thank you for coming into the city, and for coming into my life too. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Matthew 21:9

The multitudes who went in front of him, and those who followed, kept shouting, “Hosanna to the son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly as you picture the crowd on the road. Let the shout of “Hosanna” become your own prayer, asking Jesus to save and help you right now, in the middle of your ordinary week.

Luke 19:38

Saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest!”

(WEB)

Notice that the crowd names Jesus as King and blesses him as he comes. Pray this verse by speaking a simple word of blessing over Jesus, telling him you want him to reign in your home, your work and your heart.

Zechariah 9:9

Rejoice greatly, daughter of Zion! Shout, daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King comes to you! He is righteous, and having salvation; lowly, and riding on a donkey, even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

(WEB)

This ancient promise describes a king who arrives humble and riding a donkey. Pray it by thanking God that his kingdom is gentle, and asking him to make you gentle and glad to receive him as he comes.

Philippians 2:5-8

5 Have this in your mind, which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, existing in the form of God, didn’t consider equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, yes, the death of the cross.

(WEB)

Paul describes Jesus choosing humility all the way to the cross. Pray these verses by asking God to shape your attitude this week to match his, especially in moments when pride or frustration rises up.

Psalm 118:26

Blessed is he who comes in the LORD’s name! We have blessed you out of the LORD’s house.

(WEB)

This psalm was sung by pilgrims and echoed in the crowd’s welcome. Pray it as a blessing, speaking the words over the people you love and asking God to bring them safely through Holy Week.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray these words early in the morning, before the day fills up with noise. Sit somewhere quiet, perhaps with a palm frond, a cross, or a simple candle in view. If you have a palm branch from church, hold it in your hands while you pray and let the feel of it remind you of the crowd’s joy and the cost that followed.

You might also pray this prayer with someone else, such as a spouse, a child, or a small group. Read it together, take turns with the lines about the people you are carrying, and close by blessing each other. Praying side by side on Palm Sunday can turn a short moment into a shared step toward Easter.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who entered Jerusalem in humble peace go before you this week and walk beside you through every step. May he hold the people you love close and steady your heart when the road feels heavy. May you receive him as King with a glad and grateful spirit, now and all the way to Easter morning.
