This prayer is for the moment when you realize you do not yet know everything and want God to shape your heart toward humility and willingness to learn. Pray it when you are facing correction, starting something new, or noticing that pride has crept into your thinking. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words in place of mine.

Prayer for a Teachable Spirit

Lord, you know how quickly I can become sure of myself. I defend my opinions before I have really listened, and I bristle when someone points out a mistake I would rather not see. Some days I want to be right more than I want to grow. Please loosen my grip on my own ideas and make me quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to take offense.

Open my ears to the people you have placed around me, whether it is a parent, a coworker, a friend who loves me enough to be honest, or a pastor who teaches your word. Let me receive correction as a gift rather than an attack. Help me remember that you are the one who teaches all wisdom, and that every good thing I know came from you first. Give me the courage to say “I don’t know” and “I was wrong” without shame.

Make my heart soft and eager, like a child who wants to understand. Keep me curious about you, about the world you made, and about the people you love. I want to keep learning until the day I see you face to face. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am quick to think I already know the answer. Soften me right now. Help me listen before I respond, receive what is true even when it stings, and trust that you are still teaching me. Make me willing to learn from you and from others today. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 9:9

Instruct a wise man, and he will be still wiser. Teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.

(WEB)

This verse describes the difference between someone who resists instruction and someone who welcomes it. As you pray it, ask God to make you the kind of person who grows wiser when corrected rather than more defensive.

James 1:19

So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger…

(WEB)

James gives a simple pattern for a teachable heart: listen first, speak slowly, and control anger. Pray this verse before a difficult conversation and ask God to slow your reactions.

Psalm 25:4-5

4 Show me your ways, the LORD. Teach me your paths. 5 Guide me in your truth, and teach me, For you are the God of my salvation, I wait for you all day long.

(WEB)

David asks God directly to show him his ways and teach him his paths. Use this psalm as your own request, admitting that you need God to guide you step by step.

Proverbs 1:5

That the wise man may hear, and increase in learning; that the man of understanding may attain to sound counsel…

(WEB)

This verse shows that even the wise keep listening and gaining understanding. Pray it as a reminder that growth never has to stop, and ask God to keep you open to learning at every stage of life.

Philippians 2:3-4

3 Doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself; 4 each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others.

(WEB)

Paul calls believers to humility and to valuing others above themselves. Pray these words to loosen the pride that makes it hard to learn from someone you think is beneath you.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this prayer first thing in the morning, before the day’s conversations and decisions begin. Sit somewhere quiet with a cup of coffee or tea in your hands, and read the prayer slowly, pausing after each sentence to let it sink in. If you are working through a specific lesson or correction, name it silently as you pray.

You might also pray this prayer with someone who is learning alongside you, such as a spouse, a small group, or a mentee. Taking turns reading the lines aloud can make the prayer feel shared, and it gives you a chance to encourage one another to keep listening. Whoever prays it, let the words be a starting point for honest conversation with God.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who teaches us all things open your heart and quiet your need to be right. May he give you ears to hear, a humble mind, and the joy of learning something new every day. May you grow in wisdom and in love as you walk with him.
