This page gives you King James Version Bible verses about discernment, grouped by the moments when you most need to see clearly: deciding what to trust, weighing advice, and choosing the right path. It is written for anyone who wants Scripture to guide everyday judgment rather than leave it to guesswork. These verses share one thread: God gives wisdom generously, and the people who seek it learn to tell truth from falsehood, good from evil, and what is wise from what only looks wise.

Verses for Testing What You Hear and Read

Much of discernment happens in the flood of messages, opinions and claims that reach you each day. The verses in this group ask you to slow down and test what is put in front of you before you accept it.

1 John 4:1

Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

(KJV)

John tells believers not to trust every spirit or voice that claims divine authority, but to test it. Before you repost a sermon clip or act on a stranger’s prophecy, pause and ask whether it lines up with what you know of Christ. Make that one question a habit at the end of each scroll.

Acts 17:11

These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

(KJV)

The Bereans were praised because they examined the Scriptures daily to see whether Paul’s teaching was true. Their openness and their checking go together. Choose one teaching this week and read the passages it cites for yourself before you decide how you feel about it.

Romans 12:2

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

(KJV)

Paul links a renewed mind with the ability to prove what God’s will is. A mind shaped by the world reacts to pressure, while a renewed mind tests what is good and acceptable. Spend five minutes in Scripture before you make a decision that is being pushed on you by a deadline or a crowd.

Verses for Seeking Wisdom in Hard Choices

Some decisions do not come with a clear answer, and the question is not what the facts say but which path is right. These verses point you to the God who gives wisdom freely to those who ask.

James 1:5

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

(KJV)

James promises that God gives wisdom generously to anyone who asks, without finding fault. When a choice keeps you awake, put the specific question into a short prayer and name it plainly. Then listen for the next step rather than rushing to the answer you want.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

(KJV)

Solomon contrasts leaning on your own understanding with trusting the Lord with all your heart and acknowledging him in every path. Notice where your first instinct is pulling you. Write one area where you have been relying only on your own reasoning, and bring it to God today.

Proverbs 2:6

For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.

(KJV)

Proverbs says the Lord gives wisdom, and out of his mouth come knowledge and understanding. That means wisdom is received as a gift, not manufactured by cleverness alone. Keep a short list of decisions you are waiting on, and thank God for each insight that arrives as you wait.

Ephesians 5:10

Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.

(KJV)

Paul urges believers to prove what is acceptable to the Lord. The word prove carries the sense of testing something to see what it is really made of. Before a purchase, a commitment or a conversation, ask whether it is something that pleases the Lord, and let that question shape the answer.

Verses for Telling Good from Evil in Daily Life

Discernment is not only about big decisions. It shows up in small reactions, in what you laugh at, and in what you allow to settle into your heart. These verses speak to that quieter daily work.

Hebrews 5:14

But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

(KJV)

The writer describes mature believers as those whose senses have been trained to discern good and evil through constant practice. Discernment is a skill built over time, like a muscle. Pick one ordinary habit, such as the shows you watch, and practice noticing how it affects your thoughts.

Philippians 1:9-10

9 And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment; 10 That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ…

(KJV)

Paul prays that love will grow in knowledge and discernment so that believers can approve things that are excellent. Love and discernment are meant to strengthen each other. Pray this prayer for someone you love, asking that their affection for others be guided by clear judgment.

Isaiah 5:20

Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

(KJV)

Isaiah warns against calling evil good and good evil, and putting darkness for light. Confusion of this kind often comes gradually through repeated messages. When something you hear seems to reverse what is right, slow down and name it honestly before you agree.

Psalm 119:66

Teach me good judgment and knowledge: for I have believed thy commandments.

(KJV)

The psalmist asks God to teach him good judgment and knowledge, because he has believed God’s commandments. Good judgment is linked with trust in what God has already said. Ask God for that same good judgment before you begin your work today.

Verses for Asking God to Sharpen Your Judgment

Discernment grows most when you bring your mind and your choices before God in prayer. These verses encourage you to ask, to listen and to keep returning to him for the clarity you need.

Psalm 25:12

What man is he that feareth the LORD ? him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose.

(KJV)

David says that the one who fears the Lord will be taught in the way that he should choose. Reverence for God opens the door to guidance. Each morning, name one area where you want to walk carefully, and ask the Lord to show you the way.

Psalm 32:8

I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.

(KJV)

God promises to instruct and teach the psalmist in the way he should go, and to guide him with his eye. The promise assumes a close, attentive relationship. Set aside a quiet moment this week to simply wait and listen, without filling the silence with your own plans.

Colossians 1:9

For this cause we also, since the day we heard it , do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding…

(KJV)

Paul prays that the Colossians would be filled with the knowledge of God’s will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. He prays for them before he corrects them. Turn this into your own prayer for a friend who is facing a complicated choice.

Proverbs 14:15

The simple believeth every word: but the prudent man looketh well to his going.

(KJV)

Proverbs notes that the simple believe every word, but the prudent look carefully at their steps. Carefulness is not cynicism, it is wisdom at work. Before you send a message or make a purchase, look carefully at where it will take you.

How to Use These Verses

Write the verses that speak to you most on a card or in a notes app, and keep them where you will see them during the day, such as beside your coffee maker, on your phone’s lock screen, or in the front of your planner. Choose one verse each week and let it guide how you read the news and respond to advice that day.

Read them slowly and aloud when you feel pressure to decide quickly. Pair the reading with a short prayer naming the specific question on your mind. Then return to the verse at the end of the day and notice what you have learned about the difference between what is right and what only sounds right.

A Short Prayer for Discernment

Lord, you know how easily I am swayed by voices that are loud, clever or convenient. Open my eyes to see what is true and close my heart to what leads me away from you. Give me wisdom in the decisions that are in front of me today, and help me to slow down enough to listen for your answer. Teach me to test what I hear against your Word, and let my reactions be shaped by your love and by your truth. Thank you that you give wisdom generously to those who ask. Amen.
