Joshua 6:27 tells us that the LORD stayed with Joshua after the fall of Jericho, and that Joshua’s reputation spread across the whole land of Canaan. The verse is a short summary line closing the story of Jericho’s destruction, explaining why Joshua became known and respected. It was written by the narrator of the book of Joshua, traditionally attributed to Joshua himself, and it was addressed to the Israelite community who would read the story of their early conquest of the land.

So the LORD was with Joshua; and his fame was in all the land.

What Joshua 6:27 Means

The phrase “the LORD was with Joshua” describes God’s active presence and help with Joshua as he led Israel into Canaan. In the Hebrew Scriptures, being “with” someone often signals divine backing, guidance and protection for a specific task. The verse does not promise that Joshua would never face hardship or defeat. It describes a general pattern of God standing beside the leader he had chosen.

The second half, “his fame was in all the land,” explains the result. Word of what God had done through Joshua spread to the surrounding peoples, and his name carried weight. The verse is making a point about cause and effect: the reputation came because God was with him, not because of Joshua’s personal strength or strategy alone.

The Context of Joshua 6:27

The book of Joshua tells how Israel, after wandering in the wilderness, entered and took possession of the land God had promised to their ancestors. Chapter 6 describes the miraculous collapse of Jericho’s walls and the city’s destruction. Verse 27 comes at the end of that account, in the closing verses that describe the burning of the city, the rescue of Rahab and her household, and Joshua’s oath concerning the rebuilding of Jericho.

Read in that setting, the verse ties the success at Jericho back to God’s presence. Just before it, Joshua pronounces a curse on anyone who rebuilds the city, and the verse then shows that this bold leadership was backed by the LORD. Seen this way, the statement about Joshua’s fame is less a boast and more a witness to God’s faithfulness to the people he was leading.

Key Phrases in Joshua 6:27

Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”

(WEB)

This verse, spoken by Moses as he prepared the people to enter the land, assures them that the LORD will go with them and never leave them. It sets the foundation for Joshua’s ministry and explains why God’s presence with him was not a new idea but a promise already given to the nation.

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

Spoken to Joshua at the start of his leadership, this verse連 encourages him to be strong and courageous because the LORD is with him wherever he goes. It frames the presence of God as the reason for courage, the same presence that later brings the walls of Jericho down.

A Short Prayer From Joshua 6:27

Lord, you have shown yourself faithful to those who trust you to lead and serve. When I face tasks that feel too large for me, remind me that you are with me in them. Let my work and my words reflect your presence rather than my own pride. Give me steady courage for each step, and let my life bear witness to your goodness wherever you place me. Amen.
