2 Corinthians 8:16 means that Paul is thanking God because God himself placed the same deep concern for the Corinthian believers into the heart of Titus, the co-worker Paul was sending to them. The verse is a moment of gratitude, a quick thank-you that points the credit for Titus’s care away from Titus and toward God.

Paul, the apostle who founded the church in Corinth, wrote this letter to the believers there. He was writing about a fundraising project for suffering Christians in Jerusalem and was describing the people he was sending to help organize it.

But thanks be to God, who puts the same earnest care for you into the heart of Titus.

What 2 Corinthians 8:16 Means

The phrase “thanks be to God” comes first and sets the tone. Paul is not simply reporting good news about Titus. He stops to acknowledge that whatever good motivation Titus has comes from God. This is typical of Paul, who often credits God for work that people might otherwise praise in the people doing it.

The phrase “puts the same earnest care for you” describes the concern Titus feels for the Corinthians. The word translated “earnest care” carries the sense of eagerness, diligence and genuine devotion. Paul says God placed this same eagerness Paul himself feels into Titus’s heart. The verse does not promise that every person will automatically feel passion for others, nor does it describe a mechanical process. It says that when someone cares well for other people, Paul sees God at work behind that care.

The Context of 2 Corinthians 8:16

Second Corinthians is one of Paul’s most personal letters, written to a church that had a complicated relationship with him. Chapters 8 and 9 focus on a collection of money from the Corinthian believers to support fellow Christians in Jerusalem who were in need. Paul is encouraging generosity and explaining how the process will be handled fairly and openly.

Just before verse 16, Paul explains the principle of equality: those with more should share with those who have less, so that no one is left in want. Titus is part of the team Paul is sending to help carry this out. Right after the verse, Paul describes how Titus went to Corinth willingly and how another brother, known for his praise in the gospel, is traveling with him. Seeing the verse in this setting shows that Paul is commending Titus as a trustworthy partner, and he gives God the glory for that trustworthiness.

A Short Prayer From 2 Corinthians 8:16

Lord, thank you for every person who cares for others with a sincere and eager heart. Where that kind of care is missing in me, I ask you to put it there. Shape my motives so that I love the people in my life because you have first loved me. When I see good in others, help me to notice you at work and to give you the thanks you deserve. Keep my heart tender and willing toward those you have placed around me. Amen.
