1 Chronicles 26:11 names the sons and relatives of a Levite named Hosah and gives the total: thirteen men who served as gatekeepers at the temple. The verse is a short census entry, recorded by the Chronicler to show that every family had a place in the work of the house of the LORD. It was written for the returned Jewish community in Jerusalem, who needed a record of who served where.

Hilkiah the second, Tebaliah the third, and Zechariah the fourth: all the sons and brothers of Hosah were thirteen.

What 1 Chronicles 26:11 Means

The verse does two things. It lists the names of Hosah’s sons in order, Hilkiah, Tebaliah and Zechariah, and then it adds the total: “all the sons and brothers of Hosah were thirteen.” The counting matters because the Chronicler was careful to show that the temple staff was organized, numbered and assigned by family line, not by chance or preference.

The verse does not promise anything to the reader, and it does not explain why these men were chosen. It simply records a fact of temple life. Its meaning comes from its place in a larger account of how David and his leaders arranged the Levites for worship and service.

The Context of 1 Chronicles 26:11

First Chronicles was written after the exile, probably in the late fourth century BC, and is traditionally attributed to Ezra. Its first audience was the community that had returned to Judah and was rebuilding the temple and its worship. Lists like this one gave them a sense of continuity: the temple service they were restoring had roots going back to David.

The verses just before this one describe Obed-Edom’s large household and then Meshelemiah’s sons, and the verses that follow assign the gates by lot. Read in that setting, verse 11 is one link in a chain of names showing that every gate and every task had people assigned to it. The count of thirteen tells the reader that Hosah’s household was a full and dependable unit within that system.

Key Phrases in 1 Chronicles 26:11

1 Corinthians 12:18

But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body, just as he desired.

(WEB)

Paul writes that God arranges the members of the body as he chooses, which parallels how the Chronicler shows God’s order in assigning temple roles. Both passages teach that each person has a place in the community’s life.

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

This verse urges believers to work at everything as serving the Lord and not only people. It fits the spirit of Hosah’s sons, whose gatekeeping was an act of service to God’s house.

A Short Prayer From 1 Chronicles 26:11

Lord, you know the names of every person who serves in your house, including the ones no one else notices. Thank you that faithful work counts with you, whether it is seen by many or by no one. Help me to take my place in the tasks you have given me, and to do them with care and steady hands. Let my service be a quiet offering to you each day. Amen.
