First Corinthians 13:7 describes the steady, sturdy character of love. Paul says love bears up under what others bring to it, keeps trusting, keeps hoping for good, and keeps going when things are hard. The verse is written by the apostle Paul to the church in Corinth, a community that was divided, proud, and quick to argue about spiritual gifts.

Bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

What 1 Corinthians 13:7 Means

The verse lists four actions, and each one builds on the one before. To “bear all things” means to carry weight without collapsing or passing it on. Love absorbs the offenses, burdens, and inconveniences of other people rather than retaliating or running away. Paul is not describing a love that never notices pain, but one that chooses to hold it steadily.

To “believe all things” and “hope all things” does not mean naivety or ignoring real danger. Elsewhere Scripture calls believers to discernment. Here the idea is that love gives others the benefit of the doubt, assumes the best where the evidence allows, and refuses to treat people as hopeless. “Endure all things” then adds staying power: love keeps going through long seasons without quitting on the relationship or on the person.

What the verse does not promise is that love will always be rewarded, that others will always respond well, or that you will feel no strain. It describes what love looks like as a practice, not a guarantee of outcomes.

The Context of 1 Corinthians 13:7

First Corinthians is a letter Paul wrote to a church he had founded, responding to reports of quarreling, lawsuits, favoritism, and a showy approach to spiritual gifts. Chapter 13 sits in the middle of his discussion of gifts in chapters 12 and 14. Paul is making the point that tongues, prophecy, knowledge, and even great faith count for nothing without love.

Just before verse 7, Paul lists what love is not: it does not envy, brag, get proud, seek its own way, or keep a record of wrongs. Verse 7 then gives the positive side of that same love. Just after, in verses 8 through 10, Paul says love never fails, while the gifts he mentioned are partial and will one day pass away. Read this way, the four actions in verse 7 are a picture of enduring love set against temporary spiritual displays.

Key Phrases in 1 Corinthians 13:7

Galatians 6:2

Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

(WEB)

Paul’s call to carry one another’s burdens echoes the idea of bearing all things. Verse 7 shows what that burden-bearing looks like inside love, while Galatians shows its place in the wider life of the church community.

Romans 5:5

And hope doesn’t disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

(WEB)

Paul links the hope that does not disappoint with God’s love poured into believers’ hearts. That connection helps explain where the ability to keep hoping and enduring comes from, namely God’s own love working within us.

A Short Prayer From 1 Corinthians 13:7

Father, you have shown me what patient love looks like in Christ. When people wear on me, help me bear with them rather than pull away. When I am tempted to assume the worst, give me a trusting heart that still speaks truth. Keep my hope alive for the people I love, and give me the strength to keep going when the road is long. Let your love shape the way I treat others today. Amen.
