2 Peter 1:15 is Peter telling his readers that he will work hard to make sure they can recall the truths he has taught them after he is gone. He is writing near the end of his life and wants the message to outlast him. He speaks to Christian believers who already know the gospel but need to be reminded of it.

Yes, I will make every effort that you may always be able to remember these things even after my departure.

What 2 Peter 1:15 Means

The verse opens with “Yes,” which links it to the sentences before it. Peter has just said he will keep reminding his readers of truths they already know, and now he commits to something more: making “every effort” so they will remember these things. The phrase “every effort” shows that this is serious work on his part, not a passing thought. He is taking responsibility for the lasting health of their faith.

The phrase “even after my departure” tells us Peter expects to die soon. His word for departure points to leaving this life, and he speaks of it calmly. The verse does not promise that every reader will remember perfectly, and it does not claim any special power in Peter’s writing. It describes his effort and his hope that the teaching will stay with the church once he is no longer there to repeat it.

The Context of 2 Peter 1:15

Second Peter is traditionally attributed to the apostle Peter, though scholars often debate whether he wrote it himself or whether it came from a later writer using his name. It is addressed to believers who were facing false teachers and doubt about the return of Christ. Peter’s readers were established in the faith, yet they were at risk of drifting toward teachings that denied the power and coming of Jesus.

Just before the verse, Peter explains that he considers it right to stir up his readers by reminding them while he is still alive. Just after, he defends the apostolic witness, saying that the message was not a cleverly invented story but something he and others saw with their own eyes at the transfiguration. Read this way, the verse is the hinge of his argument: he will work to preserve the memory of what was truly seen and heard, because the truth of the gospel rests on it.

These verses instruct parents to keep God’s words on their hearts and to speak of them throughout the day. They show the same commitment to passing truth from one generation to the next that Peter expresses in his own words.

2 Peter 3:1-2

1 This is now, beloved, the second letter that I have written to you; and in both of them I stir up your sincere mind by reminding you; 2 that you should remember the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior…

Peter returns to the same theme here, writing that he wants to stir up his readers’ sincere minds by reminding them of the words spoken by the prophets and the commandments given by the Lord and Savior through the apostles. It shows his continuing concern for memory and faithful teaching.

A Short Prayer From 2 Peter 1:15

Lord, thank you for giving us teachers who cared enough to keep your truth before us. Help us to take seriously the work of remembering what you have shown us, so that our faith does not fade when life becomes hard or when those who first guided us are no longer near. Write your words on our hearts and bring them back to mind in the moments we need them most. Give us the same faithful care for others that Peter showed to the church, and let the gospel continue to shape our lives and the lives of those who come after us. Amen.
