Exodus 34:32 describes Moses, freshly back from the mountain, gathering the people and passing on every command the LORD had given him at Sinai. The verse shows that God’s instructions were meant to be heard, received and shared with the whole community, not kept as a private experience. Moses is the speaker, and the audience is the children of Israel who had just watched his face shine and felt afraid to come close.

Afterward all the children of Israel came near, and he gave them all the commandments that the LORD had spoken with him on Mount Sinai.

What Exodus 34:32 Means

The verse opens with “Afterward,” which tells you the people did not rush toward Moses while he was still glowing from his time with God. They waited until he had spoken to Aaron and the leaders, and only then came near. Their hesitation makes sense, since the radiance on his face had frightened them just moments before.

The phrase “all the commandments” matters. Moses did not select the comfortable instructions and leave out the demanding ones. He handed over the full set of directions God had spoken to him on the mountain, which is a picture of faithful teaching: passing along the whole message, not a convenient part of it.

The verse does not explain each commandment or promise that the people would obey them. It records a moment of transmission. What it does show is that God’s word came through a human messenger who delivered it accurately, and that the people had a real chance to hear it directly from the one who received it.

The Context of Exodus 34:32

Exodus is traditionally attributed to Moses and tells the story of Israel’s deliverance from Egypt, their journey to Sinai, and the covenant God made with them there. This passage comes after the golden calf incident, when the people had broken the covenant almost as soon as they made it. God renewed the covenant, and Moses went up the mountain again to receive the tablets. Verses 29 to 35 focus on his return.

Read against that backdrop, verse 32 carries weight. The people who had worshiped a calf now hear the LORD’s commands again through the man who had pleaded for them. The verses just before describe the fear that kept them at a distance, and the verses after explain how Moses covered his face with a veil. Verse 32 sits in the middle, showing the moment when the restored relationship began to be put into words the people could act on.

Key Phrases in Exodus 34:32

Deuteronomy 6:6-7

6 These words, which I command you today, shall be on your heart; 7 and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up.

These verses describe God’s words being kept in the heart and taught diligently to children at home and on the road. They extend the idea in Exodus 34:32 of passing on God’s commands, showing that the task of sharing them is an everyday, ongoing responsibility rather than a single event.

2 Timothy 3:16-17

16 Every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Paul affirms that all Scripture is God-breathed and useful for teaching and correction. This connects with the commandments Moses delivered, reminding readers that the full witness of God’s word remains valuable for guiding people toward faithful living.

A Short Prayer From Exodus 34:32

Lord, you spoke to Moses on the mountain and gave him words meant for your whole people. Help me to receive your word with the same seriousness and to share it faithfully with those you have placed around me. When I am tempted to hold back the hard parts, remind me that you gave the full message for the good of all. Give me patience to wait for the right moment, courage to speak plainly, and trust that you can draw people near as they hear your voice. Amen.
