Ezekiel 37:11 records God’s people describing themselves as dry bones: their hope is gone and they feel completely cut off from God. The verse shows the exiles naming their despair honestly, and it sets the stage for God’s promise to bring them back to life. The words are spoken by the prophet Ezekiel, who is told by God to speak to the people of Israel living in Babylonian exile.

Then he said to me, “Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Behold, they say, ‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost. We are completely cut off.’

What Ezekiel 37:11 Means

The verse begins with God’s interpretation of the vision. The bones Ezekiel sees in the valley stand for the whole house of Israel, meaning the nation as a whole. The image is of bones that have been lying in the sun for a long time, brittle and lifeless, with no sign of muscle or breath.

The people then speak for themselves. Their bones are dried up, which means their strength and vitality are gone. Their hope is lost, so they no longer expect that anything good can happen to them. And they say they are completely cut off, separated from the land, from the temple, and in a sense from the presence of God. The verse records their words without correcting them yet. It is an honest statement of how things felt.

What the verse does not do is promise that the people were right to give up. It describes despair as the people experienced it, and the rest of the chapter answers that despair with a promise of restoration. The verse itself is a diagnosis, not a final verdict.

The Context of Ezekiel 37:11

The book of Ezekiel was written by the prophet Ezekiel, a priest who was taken to Babylon with the first group of exiles around 597 BC. He spoke to a community that had lost its king, its city of Jerusalem, and its temple. Many of them believed that the exile proved God had abandoned them, and this belief shaped how they heard any word of hope.

The surrounding verses show a sequence. In verses 8 through 10, Ezekiel sees the bones gain sinews, flesh, and skin, but still no breath, and then breath enters them and they stand up as a great army. Verse 11 comes right after this, which means the bones are a picture of a people who have been put back together physically but still lack life. Verses 12 through 14 then move from diagnosis to promise, with God saying he will open their graves and put his Spirit in them. Reading verse 11 in this flow makes clear that the despair is real but is not the last word.

Key Phrases in Ezekiel 37:11

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

This verse says the Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. It pairs well with Ezekiel 37:11 because it also speaks to people who feel worn down and reminds the reader that God is near them in that condition.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

This verse describes God giving strength to the weary and increasing power to those who have none. It connects with the dryness of Ezekiel’s bones by showing that God’s response to depleted people is to restore their strength.

A Short Prayer From Ezekiel 37:11

Lord, I come to you honestly today. Some days I feel like my hope is dried up, and I wonder whether anything in my life can still come alive. I bring you the places where I feel cut off, from you, from others, and from the good you intended for me. You see every part of this, and you are not shocked by what I feel.

Breathe your Spirit into the places in me that feel like dry bones. Give me strength where I am empty and hope where I have stopped expecting anything. Help me trust that your word does not end in despair, even when my feelings say otherwise. Amen.
