Ezra 2:31 is a census entry. It records that 1,254 descendants of a family line called “the other Elam” came back from exile to rebuild life in Judah and Jerusalem. The verse was written by the author of Ezra, who was recording the names and numbers of the people who returned under Zerubbabel after Babylon’s exile ended. Its first audience was the community of returnees, who needed to see that every household had been counted.

What Ezra 2:31 Means

The phrase “the children of” is the ancient way of listing a family or clan, much as a family tree names a line of descent. “The other Elam” distinguishes this group from another household that also carried the name Elam, so the author is being careful about which family he means. The number, one thousand two hundred fifty-four, is the count of men and their households who went back to the land, given as a precise total.

What the verse does not do is offer a spiritual lesson on its own. It does not promise blessing, healing, or success to anyone. Its purpose is to tell you that the returning community was real, specific, and accounted for, so the reader can see God working through concrete people rather than through vague ideas.

The Context of Ezra 2:31

The book of Ezra traditionally is attributed to Ezra the scribe, a priest and teacher who led a later return to Jerusalem. Chapter 2 is a register that Ezra includes to show who came back in the first wave. The surrounding verses, Ezra 2:28 through 2:34, list other towns and families, including Bethel, Ai, Jericho, and several others, in a long, steady sequence of names and totals.

Because the verse sits inside that list, it reads best as one line in a larger story of restoration. The author has just described the decree of Cyrus that allowed exiles to go home, and the census shows that the promise was carried out family by family. Each number is a small testimony that the return was organized and that no one was simply lost in the crowd.

Key Phrases in Ezra 2:31

Isaiah 43:1

But now the LORD who created you, Jacob, and he who formed you, Israel says: “Don’t be afraid, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by your name. You are mine.

This verse speaks of God calling His people by name and claiming them as His own. It pairs well with Ezra 2:31, because the census of returnees shows the same personal care, that each family is known by name before God.

Ezra 1:5

Then the heads of fathers’ households of Judah and Benjamin, the priests, and the Levites, all whose spirit God had stirred to go up rose up to build the LORD’s house which is in Jerusalem.

This verse describes the stirring of the spirit of those whose hearts moved them to go up and rebuild. Reading it alongside Ezra 2:31 shows the people who answered the call to return and who appear in the counted lists that follow.

A Short Prayer From Ezra 2:31

Lord, you know every name and every number, and nothing about my life is hidden from you. Help me to trust that my small and unseen faithfulness is counted by you. Where I feel scattered or far from home, gather me back to the people and the purposes you have for me. Teach me to see the ordinary details of my days as part of your larger work of restoration. Amen.
