Jeremiah 23:24 means that no one can hide from God, because he is present everywhere and sees everything, including the hidden places where people think they are unseen. The LORD speaks these words through the prophet Jeremiah, and he speaks them to a people whose prophets were claiming to bring messages from God while actually saying what they wanted to hear.

Can anyone hide himself in secret places so that I can’t see him?” says the LORD. “Don’t I fill heaven and earth?” says the LORD.

What Jeremiah 23:24 Means

The verse opens with a question that expects the answer no. Can anyone hide in secret places so that God cannot see them? The obvious answer is that no one can. The phrase “secret places” points to any corner people use to conceal what they are doing, whether a locked room, a private plan, or a motive kept out of sight. God says plainly that none of these places is out of his view.

The second question, “Don’t I fill heaven and earth?”, widens the picture. God is not only watching from a distance. He is present throughout the whole created world, from the highest heavens to the ground under our feet. The verse therefore speaks of God’s omnipresence and his knowledge of every person in every place.

What the verse does not promise is a comfortable feeling of closeness at all times. In its setting it is a warning, not a reassurance. It tells the false prophets that their private deceptions will not stay private. It does not say that God will always feel near to the believer in the way a friend does, though Scripture elsewhere affirms that kind of nearness too.

The Context of Jeremiah 23:24

The book of Jeremiah is traditionally attributed to the prophet Jeremiah, who ministered in Judah in the years before the nation was taken into exile in Babylon, roughly the late seventh and early sixth centuries BC. His audience was the people of Judah and especially the kings, priests, and prophets of Jerusalem, many of whom were announcing peace when Jeremiah warned of judgment.

Just before verse 24, God says he did not send these prophets, yet they ran, and he did not speak to them, yet they prophesied. Just after it, he exposes their lying dreams and their claims to have heard from him. Read in that frame, verse 24 is God’s answer to people who thought they could invent messages in his name and escape notice. Its weight comes from the accusation surrounding it.

Key Phrases in Jeremiah 23:24

Psalm 139:7-10

7 Where could I go from your Spirit? Or where could I flee from your presence? 8 If I ascend up into heaven, you are there. If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, you are there! 9 If I take the wings of the dawn, and settle in the uttermost parts of the sea; 10 Even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me.

This psalm expands the theme of God’s presence across the heavens, the grave, the far side of the sea, and the darkness. It shows the same truth as Jeremiah 23:24 from the perspective of a worshiper who finds comfort in being fully known and never abandoned.

Hebrews 4:13

There is no creature that is hidden from his sight, but all things are naked and laid open before the eyes of him to whom we must give an account.

(WEB)

The New Testament writer states that nothing in creation is hidden from God and that all things are laid bare before him. The verse carries the same concern for accountability and the same assurance that God’s sight is complete.

A Short Prayer From Jeremiah 23:24

Lord, you see the hidden places of my heart and you fill the heavens and the earth. I confess that I sometimes want to keep parts of my life out of your sight, and I ask you to bring them into the light where you can heal them. Help me to live with the same honesty in private that I try to show in public.

When I feel that you are far away, remind me that you are near and that nothing I face is beyond your knowledge. Give me courage to speak plainly to you and trust in your steady presence. Amen.
