John 6:45 teaches that people come to Jesus because God is at work teaching them, not because they reach him on their own. Jesus says that everyone who truly hears from the Father and learns from him comes to him. He spoke these words to a crowd in Capernaum, many of whom had been following him for the bread he had multiplied and who now grumbled that he claimed to have come down from heaven.

It is written in the prophets, ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Therefore everyone who hears from the Father, and has learned, comes to me.

What John 6:45 Means

The verse opens by pointing to Scripture: “It is written in the prophets.” Jesus is not inventing a new idea. He is appealing to what the prophets had already spoken, and the phrase “They will all be taught by God” describes a future in which God himself instructs his people directly. The word “all” stresses that this teaching is not limited to a select few.

The next phrase, “Therefore everyone who hears from the Father, and has learned, comes to me,” draws the conclusion. Hearing and learning from the Father is what leads a person to Jesus. The verse describes a pattern of receiving God’s instruction and responding to it.

What the verse does not say is just as important. It does not say that everyone will be saved automatically, and it does not describe a mechanical process that bypasses a person’s response. It also does not spell out every detail of how God’s teaching reaches a particular heart. It affirms that coming to Jesus is rooted in God’s initiative and instruction, and it invites the listener to hear and learn.

The Context of John 6:45

John’s Gospel was written to show that Jesus is the Son of God and that believing in him brings life. Tradition attributes the book to the apostle John, and its readers were most likely Christians in the late first century who needed a clear account of who Jesus was. The discourse in chapter 6 follows the feeding of the five thousand and the walk on the water, and it moves toward Jesus’s claim to be the bread of life.

Just before verse 45, the crowd objects that they know Jesus’s family and cannot see how he could have come down from heaven. Jesus responds that no one can come to him unless the Father draws them. Verse 45 then explains how that drawing works: God teaches, and those who listen come. Verse 46 adds that no one has seen the Father except the one who is from God, which shows that Jesus is the one who makes the Father known.

Key Phrases in John 6:45

Jeremiah 31:34

They will no longer each teach his neighbor, and every man teach his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD;’ for they will all know me, from their least to their greatest,” says the LORD: “for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

This promise of a new covenant, in which God writes his law on hearts and people no longer need to teach one another to know the Lord, is the prophetic background that John 6:45 echoes. Reading it alongside John 6:45 shows how Jesus connects the prophetic hope to his own ministry.

John 14:26

But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and will remind you of all that I said to you.

Here Jesus promises that the Holy Spirit will teach believers all things and remind them of his words. It extends the theme of divine teaching from John 6:45 and shows how God continues to instruct those who belong to Christ.

A Short Prayer From John 6:45

Father, you have promised to teach your people and to draw them to your Son. I confess that I often feel slow to listen and quick to rely on my own understanding. Open my ears to hear what you are saying to me through your word and through the quiet work of your Spirit. Help me to learn from you with humility and patience, and draw me ever closer to Jesus, the bread of life. Amen.
